1982 Ibanez Blazer?

Stopped by a little hole-in-the-wall guitar shop today and saw an interesting Ibanez on the wall. Took it down to check it out... played it for a while. Man, what a sweet little guitar! I looked around online and it seems to be a 1982 Ibanez Blazer BL170. Two humbuckers, fixed bridge, amazing one-piece maple neck with a rosewood stripe up the back. Loved the feel of the neck... no binding or special fretboard wood, just maple.

Never seen one of these before...

Nice guitar, what were they asking for it?

$499 with OHSC... a bit steep to me. The guy mentioned "thats an old Ibanez, from back when they made quality guitars." That picture is one I found online of the same guitar. The one at the shop had cream colored pickups/bezels and had a bit more scratches/wear on it, but nothing real bad. Oh, and someone had installed a lace sensor or some other long skinny pickup just in front of the bridge, but the holes had been filled. The neck was awesome. $499 seemed overpriced to me, although I saw some on ebay in the $450 range. I'm sure they would go down if someone really wanted the guitar.

Edit - I don't think the one at the shop had a pickguard, so I may have the year wrong.

Those old Blazers are great guitars. $499 may be steep but they are not that easy to find. There's not a lot that can go wrong with those and they are true workhorses.

Re: 1982 Ibanez Blazer?

I just couldn't believe how great the neck felt. I never played a guitar that felt quite like it... Kind of a narrow D shape.

Looking at the neck types, they only list the "BL" series from 97/98. Were those Blazers the same as the earlier 90's ones? They are the narrowest ones on the list... only the '04 SA Prestige comes close.

I don't know if the Blazer reissues from the '90s were the same or not. The neck on the Blazer had dimensions similar to the best Fenders I have played from the pre-CBS era.

$499 is not a little steep, it's DOUBLE what the guitar is normally sold for.
$200-$250 MAX for a pristine Blazer.

Re: 1982 Ibanez Blazer?

On a guess, I would say the neck dimensions of the late 90's Blazers were the same as the one I played. Very slim D shape and felt great.

Yeah, I agree RGT. I see them for sale for $400+, but I don't know if they are selling or not. The Blazer I played didn't seem like a higher end guitar. While I loved the feel of the neck... and the body seemed fine... the bridge seemed very low end.

EDIT - I FOUND THE RIGHT MODEL

Not a Blazer, but a Studio SB70 - Here's a link with pics of one. You can see the funny little bridge with offset string saddles. (Interestingly, the bass in the top picture is an Peavey T40, the first instrument I ever bought. Got it when I was 15 and still have it... solid ash and heavy as hell)

Those bolt on neck Ibanezes have that Blazer/Roadstar neck but the Ibanez Musician type body similar to an offset SG.

The bridge is similar to fixed bridge entry level Blazers and are adequate. They are brass so they make up for lack of mass in its design.

Neat little guitar for sure... I guess the "Super 70" pickups were where it got it's name? A Blazer with the Super 70's? Were those pickups any good?

Here's an ebay one that sold recently, its just like the one I played except it has worn frets:

I don't know the super 70 that well. The super 58 (Ibanez PAF type) is very well regarded and somebody would have to tell you where the super 70 stands in comparison and tone.

Re: 1982 Ibanez Blazer?

Cool guitar, though somewhat overpriced. As you've surmised, they're pretty good and also underrated. The Super 70s are Alnico 8 pups, hotter and ballsier end of things. They're pretty well regarded also, having got a boost from the EVH association, as Ed's old lawsuit Destroyer had them before he hacked it up.

Catalogue entry for the BL170.

If you ever get the chance to play one... try it. The neck feels amazing! I will definitely keep an eye out for one someday, if I can pick it up cheap enough. I don't think they show up very often though.

Re: 1982 Ibanez Blazer?

I wonder if what this guy says is true... only 300 made? I have no idea how to find out. Pretty good sounding guitar too! I need to forget about this intriguing little guitar or I'm gonna be back to that little shop trying to make a deal... lol!
