Is this a 1987 PL2550?

http://www.musicgoroundalbuquerque.c...tar-silvergray
Ashurbanipal asked in a proline post a few yrs ago if anyone has seen the 87 pl2550 with IBZ USA pickups. These are gray. Are these the correct pickups or would they have been black? anyone know?

In this article, is says that the 87 models share the the oil finished necks(page 162).....
***note** the guitar shown has the 86 pickups so maybe the guitar shown is a 86 used for the photo for this article and not an actual 87 model?

Re: Is this a 1987 PL2550?

Mine had the Ibanez pickups that looked more like EMGs. I don't have it anymore, but I don't remember ever seeing one in person that had the IBZ pickups in it. I'd be more concerned with whether or not the button pickups switching system is connected, that was kind of cool Also, I don't believe any of the 2550's had oil finished necks; that was more likely true of the bolt ons. All the neck throughs I've seen have been painted, though none were sticky. These are great guitars, though I am not convinced the one you are looking at is original.

Re: Is this a 1987 PL2550?

Hmm, this is probably the fourth one I've seen with IBZ pups. I thought they were 1987, using up leftover stocks of bodies etc. with the new, redesigned pups. 1987 was a year that had all sorts of kooky combinations, some which stayed only in Japan... Though I think someone said once that the IBZ loaded ones were US only or something like that.

Yet, the one in the link is probably modded - if you look closely at the bridge pu ring, it has an extra hole drilled for the centre screw of the IBZ pup.

The stock IBZ loaded ones have bridge pu rings for 2 height screws only and the pups are black.

Jim is right about the painted vs. oiled necks, the Ibanez book is a little misleading.

Re: Is this a 1987 PL2550?

Ok, looks like not all of them came with IBZ pups. Here's an '87 with the typical ones and a stamped older style serial number (G87xxxx). First '87 guitar I've seen without the Fxxxxx serial.
