1992 Ibanez RG 550 MIJ, advices needed

hi all,

i just saw in a second hand shop, a pretty rusty '92 RG 550 Laser Blue. LOVE THE COLOUR.
of course i love the guitar aswell.
it's a '92 model, i checked the serial (by memory it should be F22....), so made in Japan, the bridge should be a rusty EDGE (please could you confirm '92 models used this bridge? i'm not really familiar with them), gotoh tuners.
Everything is messed up, which makes the project even more fun for me.

Since you surely know more than I do, i'm here to ask for some advices regarding the stress on the neck: i checked and there are 2 main problems:
1 is on the junction, as in the pic (i found them online, not the real one, but it's pretty much the same)
the other one is near the capo, as usual.

Since i'm gonna strip it completely and try fix everything, i'd like to ask you if those are MAJOR problems, meaning that the guitar is gonna break in two really soon...or not!

my plan of action is to take it all apart, clean everything, check the wiring and change the pots, pups and change the color of the plastics.

First, that's a LoPro Edge. Second, there's not much you can do about the neck pocket stress cracks--they won't hurt anything. Third--that's not a capo--it's a locknut. Cracks on the back of the neck where the two locknut bolts come through a re very common and easy to fix. Rich has a nice tutorial for doing the fix:

Guitar Center dot com has them, as does pretty much an other guitar shop. Banjomikez on eBay has special order color combos you won't find elsewhere. The link to his store is: http://myworld.ebay.com/banjomikez/ (This is his storefront, not a link to an auction). Also, drop Rich a message--I think he'll get them too.

Great score on the 550 Mag.... I'm envious. Laser blue is to me what Purple is to AlaskaBat.

Thanks all for the suggestions, I'll look at them.

RGTFanatic, you won't believe the price...160 euros...
It's pretty rusty so it's gonna be 100% stripped down, cleaned, pups changed with some EVO(still not sure...could also probably go for a petrucci sound).
Now I'm already thinking about the color scheme
Yellow over blue or black pickguard and pink hardware?!

WD 40 will help clean the hardware it may not be actual rust, I had one or two of my axes have a rust like gunk on them wd 40 cleared it all...

Great score and a wicked colour...

thanks,
do you have any suggestions how to take them apart, clean the **** out of them and put everything back?
i remember sp2333 had a pretty good thread on his white js1000, where he had pics of the trem soaked in WD40, should I do exactly what he did?

also, how do i take apart all the bridge? should i take out every single piece to clean it?

Re: 1992 Ibanez RG 550 MIJ, advices needed

I didnt do that I dont think it's absolutely necesarry just make sure that it's left to soak ina tub of WD 40 thats all I did with my Schallers took the saddle blocks and lock screws out and put them in seperately though...

Then just remove the locknut tuners, and maybe the bridge posts too, remember to unlock them...

Be carefull not to loose any small parts like the washers from the locknut...

I wouldnt bother removing the saddles unless you absolutely know/think they need it, if you do besure to palce them in order from E to e and put them back on correctly, unless your replacing the block I dont think it's necesarry...

If there Is a guide it's probably a good idea to follow it..

Good luck and be sure to take lots of nice pictures of the lazer Blue finish...

Nice score. I'm always on the lookout for those older RGs. If I found one like that with the maple board, I'd be a happy camper.

I'd like to add my endorsement for banjomikez for your DiMarzios. Just shoot him an email with what you're looking for and he'll send you a PayPal request, no need to mess with e bay.

I wonder how much the shipping cost is, i'm based in Milan, Italy (but i'm usually in London for work, so if this guy is from the UK it's lower...)
