2 questions relating to 8670

I have this black onyx 8670.

Together with it came EPR-2 (or some thing like that) which are some sort of add-on strap-locks. Anyone here uses them? I think they are not useful since they lead to too much leverage on the bolts, if you know what I mean.

Also, I was wondering why is there this little brown square on the headstock by the tuning pegs? What is its purpose?

The staplocks are bulky and unsightly in my opinion.

The brown rectangle, I believe you are referring to, appears only to be decoration. It is supposed to look like a bubinga or similar wood stripe, but I can see consisent grain through "both" woods.

The EPR-2's aren't that bulky, but slightly complex to use. Imo, just get DiMarzio Clip Lock - easy yet strong. And as stated above, the bubinga is for looks (following through from the neck basically as the JC is 5 pc neck.

I love the straploks don't see what the big deal is just hold the strap pin and turn

Not sure if that bubinga square is there for show really doesn't make any sense why they'd just put a little square there i just think thats how they come out when the necks are done. Looks cool regardless

I agree the straplocks that came with it put too much leverage on the bolts, I don't use them.

The brown rectangles(plural, there's one on the top edge, and one on the bottom edge of the headstock) is where the bubinga strips that run through the whole neck pop out at the edges of the headstock. There's a veneer on the back of the headstock that prevents you from seeing the strips there, but they're under the veneer.

At least that's what it looks like is going on to me.

You can't really see the rectangles in this pic, but if you follow the stripes through the headstock, the rectangles are on the edges of the headstock where they emerge.
