2010 Prestige Sabers

Hi Guys, first post, hope some of you can help!

I'm about to buy my first Ibanez and like the look of the new 2010 S prestige, but having spent some time researching as many posts on the S Prestige as I could find, there seems to be hardly any recent reviews or first hand reports on the 2010 models. Unfortunately I'm nowhere near any shop that stocks these in the UK, and I suspect most shops that do have stock will have pre 2010 models at the moment, so I'm relying a lot on what I can read about them online.

Has anyone here had a chance to play these new models and if so, can you report on how you are finding them, and if possible how they compare to the same models from previous years? As you will prob know, Ibanez has changed the neck and the middle pickups on the 2010 models and I am particularly interested to know how these changes have affected their sustain 'issues', balance and 'feel' if at all.

On a slightly separate note, does anyone have any knowledge/experience with the characteristics of the EGEN18 custom pups (unavailable by retail I believe?) and if any of the commercially available Dimarzios are similar or even much the same?

Please feel free to chime in with any thoughts or reports.

Cheers for now
Mama

Re: 2010 Prestige Sabers

I only own a 1998 S series so I can't really comment on the newer ones, but I do love mine. But I did want to comment on the EGEN18. That's Herman Li's signature as you probably know, and it's really wayyy overpriced for what it is. If I'm not mistaken, I thought Li used Dimarzio Evo's in his guitars. I might be wrong, but either way, you'd be better off buying any other S Prestige and upgrading the pickups, you'd certainly save a lot of money.

Re: 2010 Prestige Sabers

Egen18 Overpriced? There's subtle things about the guitar that makes it "different" if not better than a Saber.

Egen uses specially made HLM (Herman Li Model) DiMarzio Pups that is only available to that model. I'm sure there's similar retail model. Another thing is that Egen uses Edge Zero while Sabers uses ZR2 Bridges. Scalloped 21-24 frets. Unique color. Kung-fu grip. Unique inlays. Now you dont have to like those features, but just cause some of the features is not your cup of tea doesnt mean it's a "bad" or "overpriced" guitar.

I think this guy/gal is lookin for a Saber but is nervous about the "sustain" issue that is being reported by some users. It's a good guitar I would say. Most places still carry the 2008 models. Don't think the 2010 models be showing up until after July.

If you are interested in S body type, I'd recommend taking a look at the JS models, if you want 24 frets, look up the JS2400.

Re: 2010 Prestige Sabers

I'm not sure about the neck pickup, but the middle pick up seems to have been swapped (or upgraded, ST to ST2)
2010s have a slightly slimmer neck, 17mm-19mm I think, as apposed to 18mm-20mm. This might be wrong as it's from the top of my head but you get the idea.
They also have titanium reinforcement rods in the neck, 2 in fact, one on each side of the truss rod. It's called TKS I think, or KTS. Look it up.
Also lacking the allen wrench holder on the back of the headstock, and the Team J-craft logo.

Rich told me quality wise they're the same, but I do prefer the thinner and titanium reinforced neck.

I know this is your first post here, but you'll learn everyone here thinks everything is overpriced.

Welcome to Jemsite! Can't offer much info on the new Prestige Sabers, though. I've only played one from the early 1990s (awesome, I really want one) and a recent Korean version (neck pocket issues, didn't feel right, don't want one).

Except for my Les Paul Studio. Or the new Gibson 1950s Les Paul Studio Tribute, which is even cheaper at $850 (with choice of five satin finishes!). Or the Marshall Class 5.

I know you're being (a little) sarcastic but I just had to mention my ideas of good gear values.

Peace

Mike
