2012 J-Custom pickups?

So i pulled the trigger on a new 2012 J-Custom and decided to pull the trigger on the Transitions based on a couple reviews in here.
After having them installed in my guitar (keep in mind its an ALDER body) the bridge pickup sounded ok but the neck pickup sounded thin and trebly. In fact the bridge had more of the meaty sound that the neck needs.

Any pickup advice?

I still think my prestige 3120 sounds pretty freakin good.
At this point im wondering if the same pickups will work in my J-Custom and sound as good.

Any advice etc would be killer!
Thanks
Rob-

Re: 2012 J-Custom pickups?

Congrats on a beautiful guitar! Man.....I have no thinness in the Transition pickups in my J-Custom at all. Mine is a Mahog/maple top. I'm wondering if they forgot to reverse the neck humbucker when they installed them? Mine sound full and have fantastic depth and clarity.

Either that, or the neck pickup is pooched?

Very strange.

Reverse the neck pickup?
You mean poles (screws) closest to the 24th fret?

Also what's "pooched" mean?

Re: 2012 J-Custom pickups?

Yup. On my J custom, I flipped the neck pickup around. I did this the same way that the original pickups in my j custom were configured. It has something to do with phasing when you are switched in one of the positions.

Just playing it right now through a couple of different amps and I have tons of bottom and bloom from the neck pickup.

Again, if you are doing super heavy dropped stuff, this may not be the perfect choice for that. I use my 7string with the new Illuminators for that.

Pooched means.......broken ,defective, damaged, etc.

Yea, screws are closest to the 24th fret.
Took it back to the music store to see if they could double check it.
There's no way it could sound this bad..
How does it compare to a paff pro in the neck?
I like that sound in my prestige

I find the PAF Pro has a bit too much "zing" or top end when in the neck. I tried that on my J Custom previous to this set. It does work, just wasn't for me.

The transitions are good pickups but I would say they are voice more for a vintage style amp sound. That being said, I am going to drop a set of the new Titans into my J custom and see how they work out.

Re: 2012 J-Custom pickups?

I have an alder RG8320 and swapped the EMGs for Crunch Lab and Liquifire. The alder/Crunch Lab combo is hands down one of my favourite combos for tight distortion with plenty of body and character. (I play technical/groove metal in Drop C on this guitar). For the neck the Liquifire is nice but I have a feeling the AIr Norton might have more character - but I've only tried the Air Norton in other woods so can't say for sure.

NB - also tried CL in a mahogany 7 string and didn't like the combo at all - but the 6 string CL & alder combo is fantastic.

Yup.....I've tried the crunch lab in a mahogany/maple top J custom and I didn't like it either. Glad it sounded good in alder. I bet it would sound great in basswood as well.

Re: 2012 J-Custom pickups?

So no matter what i did i couldnt get the transitions to sound good. ESPECIALLY THE NECK pickup.

I think i narrowed it down to the Tone Zone in the bridge and Either the Evo or the Breed in the neck. (Im looking for the warmest, muddiest, tone of the two.)
According to the tone charts it looks like it may be the breed...
But then again the tone charts have led me astray before...:/

Any last minute thoughts on the Breed vs the Evo in the neck on an Alder Body Ibby?
Before i send them back and have them swapped..

I think it's best to know how your tech wired in the transitions before you spend more money on more pups only to be dissatisfied again.

Exactly which 2012 JC do you have? If you have the Duncan equipped 2012 it's VERY possible that your tech wired in the DiMarzios backward (out of phase) which would easily explain the thinness.........

Re: 2012 J-Custom pickups?

I had one of those from a couple of years back with the Duncan's. Mine was. A purple one. I really liked those pickups. It was the only one of my J-customs that I didn't change them out.
