I get you point Glen, as I'm sure you get mine. At the end of the day, since it worked in me, I can't call it a failed strategy. Time will tell.

RCB yes indeed I clearly see your point and & respect your opinion. I'm definitely not calling it "failed" from a business standpoint.

I can say for certain the tactic is divisive to enthusiasts and i'd argue that was anticipated & just collateral damage.

Re: 2017 Ibanez premium guitars

The tactic of building affordable JEMs as Premiums instead of Prestige at twice the price?

Or the decision to put all these upscale features into Premiums, instead of Prestige at twice the price?

It's divisive to offer customers more affordable guitars, or more interesting specs?!

Re: 2017 Ibanez premium guitars

Answer to dumb question #1 & #2 why twice the price?

Answer to question #3 - in this case it is divisive to some customers/enthusiasts.

Re: 2017 Ibanez premium guitars

Answer to stupid question asked by the god of all knowledge, because everything costs far more in Japan......

It's only divisive to country and trem snobs who would pay double the price for a Japanese made with the same [or better] specs. Or, are they really not buyers but just complainers that don't really buy anyway, or have any interest in buying [you].

Cleverly insulting, you must have been just itching for some opportunity to use that.

Or course it's just a typical diversion though.

Yawn.
I don't think you're catching the point. If you want the Prestige line to continue, you've got to get buyers excited (or at least interested) in buying new guitars from that line. If they all look the same, with the same hardware, and often the same pickups, year on year, who's going to rationalize buying a new one in the same color and configuration they already have?

A manufacturer has to drive this, or at least market it well.

I don't think you're catching the reality. Prestige is offering plenty of variety they never have before, from fretboards and top variations you haven't seen this much diversity since the early 90's.

Yes your point is well taken, because i disagree doesn't mean i didn't think it thru. You are stopping at door-1. Open it and get to door-2 then progress.

Ibanez has intentionally both stagnated & limited the Prestige line (signature and non-signature). This is 100% their decision and based on responses here it's working probably better than they'd have imagined! Maybe long term they want to keep MIJ for "Japan only" we'll never know.

But the LABOR price discussions are laughable.

Do any of you really think assembly line cost in japan is so outrageous that it costs Ibanez $2000 MORE in labor for Fujigen to build a JEM7VWH $4k (same parts as the SFG $2k) while a Fujigen made RG cost far less ($400 list) than the SFG?

That narrative is propaganda.

Re: 2017 Ibanez premium guitars

There's an IQ challenged post. Jeez.

If it cost them $2000 more then they'd have to sell it for $4000 more!! Idiot narrative.

If it costs double what it costs in Indo, and who in their right mind doesn't think it does, then the end price will be double. Discounting they will price "what the market will bear" into any scenario......

Re: 2017 Ibanez premium guitars

About the 2017 line up.... may be Rich, but there's not much to get excited about in the RG prestige line. There's nothing that would make me say "I really need to get one of those"

To me the MIJ line up seems depleted though. No RGD, no RGA. As far as superstrats go, only a few RGs (none of them particularly interesting) and an S model. You have to go to signatures for anything else.

It's kind of hard to be excited about that Prestige line up (not including signatures).

I do agree that, as a whole, the 2017 Ibanez line up is strong when you include signatures, Prestige, J Custom, Premium and Iron Label. It is a huge line up, much bigger and wider than wnything that was on offer in the 80s or 90s.

Re: 2017 Ibanez premium guitars

That's kinda the point. In 1990 JC, Premium, IR, etc, etc didn't exist. There is more variety now than at any time since the early 90's, but there has to be more variety because there has to be more price points and genres covered than there were in 1990.

Re: 2017 Ibanez premium guitars

RCB, Ibanez can't be faulted for expanding & setting their lineup for global market each with specific audiences. I'd argue some of your non-excitement is there is only so much variation of a 6 (7/8/9-string) instrument to begin with. (it's why the strat and lespaul remain timeless classics).

My AF180 review - coming soon the axe came from Mr Grumpy and is a JPN only model - has wording on this... Ibanez in 2017 has three Prestige Artstar semi/hollow body electric guitars and six (6) SIGNATURE Prestige Artstar semi/hollow body electric guitars.

That is the Ibanez Prestige strategy in a nut-shell.

In defense of Ibanez the Japan labor cost false narrative is not Ibanez driven, but fanboy driven.

Re: 2017 Ibanez premium guitars

Nobody said it was Japan only, it could be imported by any distributor that wanted to buy the minimum. Ibanez chooses to import 3 Prestige Artcores to the US, that does not have any indication on how many are available to order if they wished.

Average monthly labor rates - Indo - 2400 x 1000 IDR = $180
Average monthly labor rates - Japan - 311 x 1000 JPY = $2740

Yes, that false labor narrative is definitely driven by fanboy and has nothing to do with actual facts......
