3550mz Questtion

HI, I'm new to the forum. I bought a 3550mz recently from ebay. It came with the tools and the bridge studs set screws in the case. My question is how much of a differance does the set screws make. When I use the trem it seems like it doesnt want to stay in tune but will stay in tune for days without trem use, even when doing big string bends. Wondering if the set screws could be the problem. Thanks

Re: 3550mz Questtion

I just found the tech set up thread, for some reason I haven't looked past the Prestige thread. Guess I'll just do a set up to it and see if I can answer my own question.

If putting in the set screws didn't fix the problem, here's a few other things to check:
1. The nut might be a little loose
2. Make sure the locking pads are tight enough
3. Is the zero point system centered correctly
4. You can try it out with the zero point bar removed but then double stops won't stay in tune
5. Put a little chapstick in the groove of the stud where the knife edge sits, it's going to need some kind of lube in there

I'm sure there's other things to check also, anyone else want to chime in.

Re: 3550mz Questtion

Well I took it all apart last night and installed the set screws. Put it back together I tried to tighten the set screws and the just fell out into the body. I took it back apart to recover the set screws and found that the locks that go into the body for the set screws to grab onto are not there. So I just put it back together for now. I would imagine if there were set screws in the case when I bought it the other portion should already be installed. Anyone Know?

I have not used the EZ trem in the past but if it works the same as all the rest of Ibanez's set screws........ then you need to lower the height of the posts before setting the "locks".

Can you post pics of the trem as it is in your guitar now. then pics of the post's and set screws........... take enough pics so that we can see everything that you do.
I can almost guarantee that this is just a setup problem and that we can get you sorted out in no time..

Sorry, I didn't see that you don't have enough post's to add pics. PM me a link to pics and I'll post them here.

I haven't had a chance to take it back apart yet but I'm sending you some pic of how low my bridge is set. I can't lower the string height anymore. So what I'm trying to say is that whatever the the part is in the body that the set screw applies pressure to is not there. So even with the bridge studs lowered the set screw still falls out the bottom.

I think I figured it out. The 6mm inserts that go into the body are missing. I was looking at the set up procedures on Ibanez rules when I came across the pics of the locking set screws. I'll verifiy it when I pull back apart but I dont remember seeing them in there when I took it apart the first time. Thanks RGTFanatic....
Oh, does anyone know where I can purchase these inserts?
