540P Question

Hi,
I read an old thread here about 540P's in which there was some discussion about all the variation over the few years they were manufactured. I saw an 89 (from the serial number) Ibanez S-style that was white, with a 5-way switch (no mini toggles), 2 knobs, and the input jack in the front. Seems like a 540S except the edges of the body appear sharper than on an S-series. Plus, I wasn't aware that the 540S was ever offered in white? So I'm wondering if its actually a 540P. If that is the case, then is the only difference between the later 540P and the 540S the slight difference in body shape and the body wood (an old catalog I have says the 540P is alder, the 540S is mahogany, and the 540R is basswood)?

The Power does not have a face mounted jack.

If I did I'd have guessed the correct model, I just know it's "not" a Power

I agree, Rich comes up with some very Ibanez-savvy answers. I'm learning a lot here. So even the later 540P's that had the 5-way switches still had side-mounted input jacks? OK, then, I guess I'm back to a 540S. So I must be wrong about them not being available in white, eh? By the way, is the alder, mahogany, basswood distinction for the three 540s correct?

I will remind ya, Rich! I'll reiterate my offer to scan them if ya don't want to pay for a scanner - I'll scan & upload to my own web space and send them right back to ya...

For the last two days, I've been putting in 4-5 hours a day putting sticker after sticker on file after file to distinguish the years they were from. Let's just say in two days I've gone through four 500 sticker boxes.

Well, the main question was whether this guitar (described in my first post) could possibly be a 540P? The older threads mentioned that the later ones had the 5-way switch, but I wasn't sure about the input jack on the face. (Rich answered that one). Also, has anyone ever seen a white 540S? I never had, but I guess this must be one. Maybe the more squared off edges were my imagination. I've sorta been wondering how different the alder bodied 540Ps sounded as compared to the mahogany 540S. Nuno, I saw in the old posts that you were into the 540Ps. Want to share your observations?

Topic shift: Rich, I think it would be great if we had a site where all of the old catalogs were posted. The "Blue Horizon" and "Ibanez Vintage" pages have some, but most years/models are missing. A lot of the questions posted in the forum (including mine!) could be answered from the old catalogs. But I believe you: this would be a HUGE task. Plus it would take a lot of server space. Is there anyway the group could underwrite this as a project? I'd certainly throw in some cash. It's not fair to ask you to undertake it for freebies (of course, you may have only been kidding).
Cheers,
Albert

Good point. Alot of the cat scans are on jemsite, i just added RGs but much more need to be done. I have the space available but the limiting factor is getting the catalogs scanned...i don't have the 87-90 cats. If someone can get those done, hi-res that would be a great start... glen
