540R thoughts...

I LOVEEEE THIS GUITAR!!! Holy cow its amazing. Stunning clean sounds!!

The switches are actually more annoying then cool. Definitely understand the swap to the 5 way switches lol. However, I like being able to turn them all on or off! SO Im not sure if theres a way to have my cake and eat it too here... lol

Anyway, pickups kinda stink. Thinkin about swapping them out, Tone zone in the bridge, some dimarzio single coils or mini humbuckers... (I hate hum!), but Im afraid to "ruin" the guitar. Its almost as old as I am, not sure I want to go chopping things up,

backstop is annoying and useless, not sure why people are in love with this thing so much. at least for me, im not a fan.

All in all, for 500 bucks, this is definitely extremely tough to beat!!!!

lol dont get hasty I would keep them if I swapped them out just to keep it "mint". This thing is in such amazing shape, I cant beleive its age. even the hardware is perfect... I doubt it was played very much to be honest.

Its the "ibzUSA" pickups. Not fan Bridge humbucker has the strength of a daisy rock guitar. it's bloody awful. The coil split is un-noticeable, except for the addition of 60 cycle hum. Im feelin a tone zone.... something awful!

Im pretty sure thats heresy, but hey, I dont care

and NO! you wont get my pickups fo free

Re: 540R thoughts...

the old ibz usa pups were actually made by dimarzio. I think the F1 was described a hotter PAF Pro.

I can understand your desire to change out the pickups. i changed mine out to a paf joe and mo joe in my radius. but i kept the f1's and put them in my SZ.....

good luck on your tone hunt.

Hi,..
Once more I am puzzled! I would never have thought that certain strings
would give better result with certain wood! I always kind of thought that
all strings are created the same ...

My 540R HSS is stock as a rock. I think the value as collector is better retained if you make it standard. I play all of my guitars, they are not case queens. The IBZ USA pickups are great imo.

I put a "Custom 8" Seymour Duncan in my 540-R that I modified. It sounds awesome.

Re: 540R thoughts...

Before changing the pickups try adjusting them properly first (if they sound weak to you, maybe raising them a little will help) and give them some time so you get used to them.
Also don't be afraid to change a few settings on your rig.
90% of the time I want to change decent pickups on my guitars I do this and it works.
In the past I wanted all my guitars setup the same, nowdays I like variety. (or maybe I am just getting old )

Re: 540R thoughts...

is there really a collector issue with the radius series? these guitars cost around 900 when they were new, after 20 years we are still getting them for around half of that.....

while i absolutely LOVE my radius, and it is really the only guitar i wouldnt get rid of, it may be another 20 years before it really is "collectible"

what in gods name are you talking about lol

Honestly, if I dont wind up selling it, I'll have it sitting around in the same condition its in for the next couple decades. I feel in my heart the value of these will begin to rise as more get beat up and ultimately "parted out".

jazz -> I did that already. its not the output that I dont like, Im just not a fan of the tone. its too ... plain. Its hard to describe lol. i love the "in your face" ness of the tone zone pickups.

lerxst -> Man, I dont know why, but I have serious brand loyalty towards dimarzio. Its a comfort thing I think lol.

And obviously,$900 20yrs ago is not the same as $900 today. Although Korean and Chinese quality guitars are competing now.

+ a HUGE 1 there - I was a Dimarzio loyalist/koolaid drinker for years, and now I've converted almost all of my guitars to SDs.

Im another SD guy (i know, blasphemy in the Ibanez world)

my 570 has a SH-6 in the neck and an L500XL (real deal Bill and Becky version) in the bridge.

You are practically going to have to pry those pups out of my cold dead hands
