Re: 8 strings

Depends on if you are going lower or higher, tuning on an 8 string is
F#, B, E, A, D, G, b, e on an XL scale neck, or

B, E, A, D, G, b, e, a on a 25.5" scale neck.

Re: 8 strings

I don't think any strings would make it to high a. I don't remember where I heard or read it, but I think Vai first wanted to make a 7 string tuned like E-A-D-G-b-e-a, but he ran into problems because the high a would snap before he could get it to pitch. IF I remember correctly.

Re: 8 strings

Hamer did a production 7 string with a High A, use a .007 and it works fine, I've done 8 strings with that gauge as well. I wouldn't have posted it if I didn't know for sure that it works.......
I've tuned .009's to high A in the past as well for different nashville tunings, they break fairly easy, but it's possible.

He has a fan-fretted 8 though, so the high A has a shorter scale length (I think).

Re: 8 strings

i think that the high a on that is 25.5, the lower strings go to 26.5 or somethin, and its said on his website he uses an .008 for the high A
personally id want a shorter scale for i high a as i doubt that would be very balanced with the other strings at that much tension
