'88 RoadStar 580B (BallBack)

My brother Dave just got this older Tele style Ibanez Roadstar Special 580B, sometimes called the Ball Back. It's a Tele style guitar made of mahogany in Bensalem, Pennsylvania in '88. These were only made for about 6 months, so there aren't too many of them.
I don't know if you can tell from the pics, but it's got a painted mahogany pickguard (you can sort of see the grain in the last pic). There is a large hollow cavity under the pickguard, so the guitar isn't as heavy as it could be. Coil tap, Edge, and IBZ/USA pickups, Gotoh tuners, and a rosewood board round it out. It sounds great, plays great, is very nearly mint. Cost under 300 with original minty case!

GREAT !

Has the same appeal to me as the 540PII - even looks like something from the same generation... You're not selling it, incidentally ?

Are you sure it was *made* in Bensalem? the PA plaque doesn't mean that. I don't know about this model anyway.

Just like the S540s with the "Custom Made" plaque- it was ASSEMBLED in Bensalem. Made in Japan

Oh god I've got to have one! Teles and Ibanezes are my two gear faves, I had no idea they were combined in such a yummy way. If anyone stumbles across one for sale in Oz...

I like it...but the body shape doesn't sit well with me. If it were a true Tele shape, I'd be all over it

I think it's a given that the neck was made in Japan, and likely the body as well. I don't know where it was painted and such, but the bottom line is it's a really nice guitar. We're going to put a DiMarzio Steve Morse bridge pickup in her, and maybe a Duncan Jazz or an Antiquities in the neck slot. As I said earlier, it's my brother Dave's guitar, it's just staying at my house at the moment. He's got about a dozen Ibanezes, and he got them all very cheaply, and they are all really nice. You can get a gorgeous bound ebony boarded Proline for less than 200, if you look and wait. This guitar is a bit special though, because it's so different from the rest of the RGs. Definitely pick one up if you can, especially if you find a mint one cheap, you really can't go wrong.
BTW, Seamus, in pic 2, was definitely made in the USA

Ummm...how about common knowledge and past history? If you've got proof to the contrary, please share!

No need to get sassy bub Anyways Ive just always been told on this forum especially that their is nothign special about the s series guitars that have the custom made plaque on them. That they were all made in japan anyways. So im just asking for concrete proof to the contrary. thats all. Link me to some info that states this will ya?
