Acoustic 7's... are they still around?

So i'm pretty much where i want to be in terms of my electric guitar collection, so i'm now looking to get a bit more breadth. Eventually i'd like to have a 7-string acoustic, a nylon string guitar, and either a 6-string bass or a 5-string acoustic bass (or maybe both!).

What's happening with 7-string acoustics these days? I'm guessing that Dean has discontinued their 7-string models. Other than Dean and Ibanez, did anyone else do a production 7-string acoustic?

Is Ibanez still making the AJ307? Who has played one, and what were your impressions? If i'm going to get one, i'll pretty much have to order it and hope i like it, because i don't think anyone around here is ever going to have one in stock.

Thanks for any info.

I haven't played the AJ307, but considering the RIDICULOUS prices 7 string guitars are going for on ebay, I'd say try it!

(I really should stop looking at ebay....I'm gonna go insane....killer prices and selection...but shipping + tax makes it very hard for me to buy! )

Yeah, i'm in the same boat with shipping and taxes, too. My trans red 442R cost me over C$160 in C.O.D. charges at the door. (Taxes, duty, customs brokerage, taxes on customs brokerage services.)

So much for "free" trade.

that's like US 100 right?

to me:

shipping: about US$150
custom duty :7%
vat: 17% (over price plus 7%!)

so if a guitar costs US$500, my final cost is $775.95!

I really should get a stewardess girlfriend!

I believe Schecter made 7 string acoustics. Im not positive, but I think I recall seeing them in a catalog somewhere. I dont think they sold too many. you might find them around though.

Get the AJ307. I just got a new one about a month ago. Quite nice. Needed a little tweaking as all Ibanez do but well worth getting. DO NOT mess with the dean or anything else unless its totally custom made. I did alot of research and there is nothing else out there worth getting other than the AJ307.

The AJ 307 is still on the ibanez site.

I've been using the aj 307 for the past three years or so, and it's been a pretty good guitar, though there have been MANY problems with it. don't completely rule out the Dean. The ibanez has a narrower nut, even narrower than normal seven strings, but the Dean has a wider nut. This might be a playability issue. Also, I've had big problems with intonation on the B string, which is a PITA because i like to play high on the fretboard.

I've allready made numerous posts about my problems with the aj 307, a quick scan down this section might yeild some results.

Happy hunting

I've owned the Ibanez 7 accoustic.

My Thoughts on it...

the good...
Plays fantastic! The tone really surprised me, considering its not an expensive guitar... I've paid 1200.00 for an accoustic that didn't sound near as good(at 700.00 for the iby).

the bad...
needs a fret job from day one, poor fret job... the top of the guitar doesn't look 'that' good. If you just want to play chords its fine, but if you want to play leads, the frets are soooo rough!!!

I sold mine cause I needed some cash for something(who knows)... but I'm considering buying another and having it refreted with larger frets(although the stock ones are fine, but are rough!!) and painted cause I doubt the top will look that good.

if anyone has any specific questions to ask about the iby 7 accoustic just ask...

i've had some problems with mine too - the narrow nut is not comfortable for me to play on, but i have really thick fingers.

i had a high fret making the first and second strings buzz out on the 13th and 14th frets, but i had that fixed by my local dealer under warranty - the ibanez acoustics have a lifetime warranty. they adjusted the truss rod too and gave it a much better setup than the factory had. it played pretty good after that, but i haven't played it in a long time - i should get it out just to be sure it's still ok.

i never had any problems with the electronics, like your old posts describe.
