Acoustic Necks - etc...

The neck on my acoustic is very thick, is there anything I can do about this? *Also, it has a tone that's too bassy and not trebly enough, what can I do about this, I already use extra-light string guages.

There's not much you can do there. In acoustic guitars, the tone depends much more of the wood than an eletric. You can't just go to your EQ and cut the lows and boost the highs (unless you have an eletric-acoustic). About the neck, well, you can't just replace it for another one in an acoustic. That's very complicated and almost impossible to do with satisfatory results. The only thing you can do is lower the action for faster playing, but I think the tone is much better in an acoustic with high action (mine is about 3,0 mm in 21st fret).

I have a Washburn EA20 Festival Series that I love. I use .013 strings and I don't have problems with tone, because of the wood, of course. The neck is also very thin and fast. It's just great for me!

The main problem with mine is that it's got a smaller body and shorter scale I think. *(I got it when I was *It doesn't have 21 frets, or anything even close to that. *But, y'know, it works for now.

I suppose one option would be to sand down the back of the neck, but I wouldn't recommend that...you might end up ruining it. *

Just save the pennies for a Taylor...or even some of the Yamaha acoutic/electrics have nice necks on the thinner side.

I have a Yamaha and i have to admit that the neck is quite slim....surely not a wizard by any standard, but i think it compared to strat necks.

If you want brighter tone i think a refret with bigger frets might help. Since the wood is making the tone bassy, try and get the strings away from the fretboard with higher action and higher frets, so that when you fret most of the string is only touching the metal frets.

Another idea would be to craft a replacement bridge of an alternative wood...many times bridges are easily replaceable.

Hmm...this is extreme...but you could also have a luthier replace your fretboard with an Ebony one, and make you an Ebony bridge while he's at it.

Also try different makes of strings. I use DR TiteFits on my RG but made the MISTAKE of fitting DeanMarkleys when the tech set it up with 10's. Man, they blow the bass bums out of my amp and make it sound farty!!! You will never believe how much difference string brands have between each other.

I'm actually using a set of Martin Extra-Light strings that really help the tone. *It's better than the strings I had on before. *I can't remember what they were.

Also, what 12-string acoustics would you recommend? *I want a good acoustic/electric with a single cutaway. *I've tried an Ovation, and another company, the name of which I can't remember. *I liked 'em both.

The Guild JF65-12 is a great 12-string acoustic. And it's very beautiful also!

On the 12 string, really depends on how much you can spend. *Larrivee makes great guitars for the money...very high quality. *I played a lower end 12 the other day and really liked it.
