action adjustment question...

I want to lower the action on my rg2570. Should i first check if the nut has shims under it? I hear that some rg's have shims under the nuts. If so, should i take these out to lower the action or turn the stud bolts on the bridge?

If you think the action is too high at the first few frets, then take out the shim. But for the rest of the neck it's a combo of adjusting the bridge studs and truss rod.
