To all Scalloped nect guys-FYI

I've just recently found this out. A friend sent me a tape that was made for Deep Purple. It contained all the live concerts footages and video clips that were made from the late '60 all the way to '90. As I was watching the tape with my nephew (who is totally in to YJM for the moment) and there was an old footage of Strange Kind of Woman and it must have been from the late '60 or early '70 because they all were so young.

All the sudden! bam! Close Up of Richie Blackmore! I'll be g........, SCALLOPED NECT! Ah ha!

And we've continued on and noticed that all Richie's Strats that we saw were
all scalloped.

Who started it, again? Sixteen century who?

Re: To all Scalloped nect guys-FYI

Most people know about his necks being scalloped hence the Richie Blackmore scallop (scalloping in a way that it is its deepest right behind each fret, instead of being its deepest right in the middle of each fret i.e. the way Malmsteen has his scallops) Both methods have thier ups and downs, I personally prefer Blackmore's scallops because they are better for stretched out riffs in which you need your finger practically on the fret lol.

You're 100% right and in many cases the humps the scallops in the wood create are used for the frets.

That's why Malmsteen did it, or at least where he got the idea from!

Well, according to the Malmer he picked up the idea from working as an instrument repairman in Sweden as a youngster. Supposedly a 16th century lute came into the shop with a scalloped board and no frets (the rasied parts acted as frets). He liked it and decided to do it to all his guitars. That is story now.

However, I distinctly remember reading somewhere forever ago in a magazine (before this Internet age we are in now ) that he did it because of Blackmore. I think Yngwie may be changing his story now because Blackmore has ripped on Yngwie so much in past interviews. I have the 80's guitar mag from when I was a kid with some pretty hilarious statements about Ygnwie from Ritchie. That's got sting a little bit, having your idol rip your whole playing style and fashion style apart like that. Poor Yngwie.

That's just my theory. If I can dig up the interview where Yngwie blantly states he scalloped his boards because of Ritchie, that would confirm everything.

Re: To all Scalloped nect guys-FYI

What I heard was that he was introduced to the idea from Blackmore, and when he was working as a repairman he saw a lute that somebody had done so he scalloped his frets.

But the idea came from Blackmore. Just like the idea of a Jem came from Steve Vai, but Ibanez makes the guitars available to us
