RG-550?? Or is it a 770?? I'm no good at this. All I know is that there's one exactly like that but with a black pickguard (and maybe a rosewood or ebony fretboard...I have horrible memory) marked as a used (it shows) RG-550.

Keep in mind those are US catalogs, Euro catalogs will be slightly different. My guess would be RG550DY reissue, but it's got a mirrored guard. One of our Euro brothers will be along with an answer soon

Looks to me like Rich said, an RG550DY with a the guard swapped out. It doesn't appear to be close enough to the edges of the body to be original

At first glance it looks like a 550DX (they had matched color mirrored guards) but the DX should have cosmo knobs and hardware. The stuff on there looks JPM black to me, that could be the photo, but either way it's definitely missing the cosmo knobs.

There's a few images of an older 550DX here on my site for purposes of comparison. I really like the blue DX.

Who asked if it was a 770?! You may leave the classroom!

I'm not sure about that one, I'm very tempted to say it's a RG550DY re-issue with a retrofitted pickguard, maybe custom made or maybe from another guitar.

The RG550DX stopped production before 99, 93 was their last year, if I recall correctly, having been replaced with the RG550LTD which of course had shark tooth inlay. the replacement to the RG550LTD, the RG550EX have rosewood board and I don't think came in till 2000.

However, I do recall a batch of RG550's being made with similar coloured guards for "Musical Exchanges" a few years ago. But they had snake inlays and gold hardware, definately not one of these. So yep I'll go with my firsty suggestion, and RG550DY with a different guard, whether this is a modification, or a factory upgrade I can't tell you.

I agree i like the idea but not a sanke inlay like that

If it was done in abalone on roeswood then i might like it and it might not look so cheap and nasty

This guitar is RG505DY (not 550DY) for 100%. Friend of mine has one exactly like that (no mods).
