But why not give her a 7VWH then? I don't get it? She's your daughter!

Because he said he doesn't want to waste the money. I agree with the sentiment, but I don't think I'd buy a $2,200 guitar for my kid either with the risk that they would play it once and never use it again.
Then again, you could always go with the approach of "well, if you're not going to play it, I will!"

Re: Is anyone happy with a 555

Nat was happy with hers

Lol...this pic taken at the IGF in Bath
(2002) I was bummed at my lead volume level (or lack there of) until Jimi Savage ran in and saved the day WOO HOO!!

I played her 555 and set it up as well. It played comparable to any RG I've experienced

555's aren't bad guitars. They just get a bad name because they arent "TRUE" Jems.

Oh well....

Darin, do it

Great (devious) minds think alike... that was indeed my thinking.

Re: Is anyone happy with a 555

For a 14 year old there is nothing wrong with a 555. It's a much better guitar than most 14 year olds have.
I'd say it's perfect for her if she's into Vai and would like a Jem.

LOL! I need to work on having kids soon so I can cleverly buy new guitars.
"Hey little Johnny! You want a Destroyer, right?"
"No, dad, I want a bike!"
"What's that? A Destroyer?"

Re: Is anyone happy with a 555

Yeah, but they have horrible paint and screw head inlays! Yuk. RG550 with a pickup upgrade kicks the sh*t out of it, and also has a very similar neck.

Darin, the 555 isn't a bad guitar, just over-priced when new. I'm sure you could pick up a nice used one at a decent price.

When I was 14, I was still dreaming about learning how to play, nevermind owning a nice guitar
By the time I was 16, I was allowed to have a part-time job and bought myself this heap of ****e!!

Re: Is anyone happy with a 555

I had a Kramer Stryker when I was that age and a 20w Ross amp. 'Nuff said!
I'm not as down on the dbk like Dee but I agree completely on the 550. Even second hand it kicks a$$!

Re: Is anyone happy with a 555

Get her the cheapest piece of wood there is with strings attached. If she's wanting to learn to play guitar, she'll do it with that one.

I played with a nylon strung acoustic for 3 years before I got my first electric one. The acoustic was good enough to learn the Maidens and Metallicas. Then my first guitar was an Ibanez Roadstar II. Cheap, but liked it a lot and it was fun to play. When I got better and got my own money from a job, I bought my JEM77FP. I'm sure I wouldn't respect her as much if it was just a gift from someone.

So, if she wants to be a guitarist, it doesn't matter what she plays with. Like "not the size of dog in the fight", y'know?

Geez,... If I would've gotten (even) a JEM555 when I started playing...

True. There's something to be said for paying your dues on a sketchy guitar.

She has a nice Schecter now. And a Vox Valvetronix on a Legacy cab.
