Bee-hive knobs for the new millenium

Some may recall the cool pewter-ish bee hive shaped knobs from the late eighties. They had three grooves in them that held a rubber ring/washer each. Those aren't made anymore. But there is a decent enough way to get the same feel from Ibanez.

Here's a shot from a guitar with the knobs.

Here is the Ibanez knob. All you need are some rubber washers to fill the three grooves and you're golden.

You can get these knobs from Rich. Note that they are not metal knobs; they are rubber.

Yeah been doing that for years, just trim out the little tabs in the grooves then add skinny rubbers to complete the look.
The next best thing to the real deal...I'm beehive crazy.

corey
What gauge skinny rubbers do you use? I'm using 8, 9, 10 top to bottom.

Hmm. Of course you being in Australia might mean that you have different sizes than here in the states.

Rich is the man himself! The only guy to go to when you want Ibanez anything. Whether it be parts, guitars or just info, he's the one to talk to. See that swirled banner at the top of the page that says "Ibanez Rules!!"? That's his site. Check it out.

Re: Bee-hive knobs for the new millenium

I think I paid something like $80 to get two cosmo beehive knobs. I needed one for my 540P!

I want to get the other one redone in gold for my RBM2.

Re: Bee-hive knobs for the new millenium

What exactly is so good about BeeHive knobs? Is it just a looks kind of thing or do the rubber rings help with grip? Or something else?

Re: Bee-hive knobs for the new millenium

It's a looks and period-correctness thing. Many of the Roadstar Pro series that were produced in the late 80's as well as the Maxxas guitars came with beehive knobs. If you want to have an authentic guitar, you need beehive knobs.

The funny thing is that if you look at old catalogs, they're totally inconsistent. Examples:

http://www.ibanezrules.com/catalogs/us/1989/p.jpg

http://www.ibanezrules.com/catalogs/us/1989/r.jpg

What it seems like is that the USA-assembled Roadstar Pro guitars had a hair amount of variability in parts like knobs, strap pins and pickups (some black, some grey).

Re: Bee-hive knobs for the new millenium

They are a Japanese knob that were fitted to EVERY 540 variant in japan.
They were standard most countries except the U.S where most 540's got a standard dome knob.
They definitely were showing up in some U.S stocks but not consistently a standard feature, other than the high end Reb Beach and Frank Gambale models of course.

I'm sure Rich could shed more light on the reasons they were not favored for the U.S market.....i love them and have a few sets that jump from guitar to guitar.

Re: Bee-hive knobs for the new millenium

Only the RBM2 had a beehive knob, the RBM1 had a plastic volume knob.

I didn't realize that they were a Japanese knob. I wonder who made them? If that company still makes a rubber one, perhaps they make metal ones as well?
