Best Ibanez model for modding

Hi,

I was looking at the Andy Timmons signature models because I love his tone. At the same time, I don't see why to pay a lot of extra $ just for a signature model.

What Ibanez models would you recommend in terms of playability/mechanical set-up/quality? My plan is only to replace pick-ups and wiring (being an electrical engineer ) The configuration should be something like H-S-S or H-S (likely with single-coil sized humbuckers). So far, all my guitars are H-H and I'm looking for a more bell like tone for leads now.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Re: Best Ibanez model for modding

Good one!
I'm also gasing for an AT100 or AT10P for a while. but I would not pay that price too especially on the 10P.

I've been toying the idea of modification as well.

First, A cheap GIO GRG 140 should be a good donor to be an AT-wannabe.
but majority of its ingredient doesn't match the AT dna.
for example : the AT radius 305, while the GRG 400.
Also At has narrow nut, where the GRG is standard.
not to mention the wood material : alder vs mahogany/basswood, 22 frts vs 24 frets, etc..

So everything is so wrong if you mod a GRG to be AT.
If just for the 'looks' it's fine, but other than that just wrong.

my main intention to get an AT is the feel and tone of it, so I deleted the GRG from my list.

Now to answer your question, the best answer is RG 550.
it's easy to get aftermarket replacement pickguard with your choice of pickups configuration.
Been done that too, I had RG1550 modded to strat style S-S-S, and another one with H-S.

The RG440V might be a good base for what you want.

Re: Best Ibanez model for modding

I turned my RG560 into an AT clone Put both the AT-1 and cruisers in it and it sounds GREAT

If you can't find a cheap used 560, find an RG2540ZEX (maybe Rich has one in stock still).

Thanks for those suggestions!

The RG 550 is the closest to a SSH I could find on Ibanez' US site. Instead of 30 frets I'd prefer a second single-coil pickup, actually.

How does a RG 440V compare to a RG 560 or 2540ZEX in terms of playability? The 440 looks like a cheaper model but as long as this only affects pick-ups or paintjob, I don't care.

The 2540 is prestige, the 560 is Golden Era MIJ. The 440V is Indonesian made. If you don't have a problem with an indo-made Ibanez go for it, but if you'd rather have MIJ, get the prestige or 560.

Re: Best Ibanez model for modding

Not sure what kind of bridge you want... but there are quite a few Ibanez HSS guitars out there:

I have been modding my 350/450 for a decade : ) Decent necks on those older ones.. I haven't played a newer one. I'll be interested to see how this all works out

Thanks for those proposals, I apprciate it!

I did not realize that the product lines of Ibanez differ that much from country to country. Some of those models I've never seen here in Switzerland but I will keep my eyes open now!

The 550 folks are suggesting are the late 80's early 90's models, not the new 30fret model. Not even sure why Ibby decided to call that newer one a 550.

I see. Now it makes much more sense.

Re: Best Ibanez model for modding

I'd say an RT650 is a good base. It was actually the model Timmons was associated with before he got his own AT signature (check the pics from the 92/93 catalogs)

It has a 42mm nut, thicker neck and despite not being HSS, you can change the pickguard to make it so.
