Best Pickups upgrade for RG 2820

I am thinking to upgrade pickups in my RG 2820. I want brutally distorted sounds like Metallica or Pentara.

When I look around this site, some are recommending Dimarzio AN and TZ. Is it suitable to put Evolution? How about EMGís active pickups like EMG 81-85?

Has anyone here tried Evolution or EMG with RG 2820 before?

Mushi (on www.guitariste.com) as tried it and seems to be happy with evo's on his 2820...

I think Tone Zone + Air Norton or Tone Zone + Paf Pro would be a little better...
I had evo's on a JS100 (which was in basswood) but it didn't sound has warm as the Tone Zone + Air Norton I have on my J-Custom

You can also try Tone Zone + Humbucker from Hell (like french guitarist Patrick Rondat as on his RG), it's awesome !

Hey!

Fist advice: think about your amp setup,
What amps are you playing through?
and please don't tell me you're playing through a GT6 or a pod, or anything where pickups don't really matter.

If you want to sound like metallica, get a mesa boogie triaxis or mark series amp, before you change the pickups. If pantera (I guess) is the thing? check out dimebag's equippment, and get the real thing. And believe me, the amp has a lot more to say than pickups, and in the end you might like your pickups very well.
Pods and similiar sounds good, but definately different.

For my case: I like petrucci's sound better than anything, that's why I use boogies and steve's special in the bridge, and air norton or evo neck, in yes....neck position.

Hope you get my point, and it helps, I'm not arrogant, only speaking the truth ;-)

Thanks tony777.

I got your point about the AMP.

I have been so itching to put EMGs on my RG. But I didnít see many people use EMGs on RGs instead they go for DiMarzio. As you know, I cannot get refund if I donít like the tone after upgrade. Thatís why I came here to ask people in this forum.

I have a small practice Roland Cube 30 W. I live in small apartment so I canít use big amps at home. By the way, this small amp has COSM mesa boogie emulation but awful. I have tried small pure tube amps from Fender and of course they all sound good in clean channel, but sound horrible with distortion pedals.

Any suggestion for my situation?
Thanks for your time.

Hey!

What can I say? only thing is that I wouldn't go for pickups or your situation.
I believe a pod xt, would do it for you (I have a pod 2.0, and it's definately not as good), and you can use headphones as well, and it sounds great.

A lot of people change pickups, because it's more affordable than change amp setup, but it's not really leading them anywhere.
I've been there too, and my experience was that I hated the evolution bridge pickup, when I got my mesa boogie setups.

bottom line: I haven't tried a 2820 with my own amps, only through a fender tube amp in the store, so I can't really tell if the pickups are great or not.
My point is: First things first ;-) EMG's will not make your cube scream more than the dimarzio's that is on the guitar, it's just a waste of money.

Good luck
Tony

First off, I have to agreed that the EMGs will not make your Amp scream louder and the AMP is important to the tone......sometimes, read on. With the multitude of processors and effects (especially on a PC incorporated rig) you can get your guitar to sound like anything you want; but you have to spend money to achieve this.

EMGs will send a more powerful signal to the amp though, possibly causing you to fry you amp sooner if you decide to go with changing the pickups, I would consider this:

Play your guitar through a power amp, with a set of non colored speakers and most importantly no effects. Once plugged into the power amp you will be able to hear the true sound of your guitar.

There is a big difference between DiMarzios and EMGs especially when you have direct mount or floating pickups. Also the wood plays a huge factor, each pickup type will display different attributes depending on the wood type. The only way to truly know is to play your guitar clean and for quite some time and get to know what the guitar is capable of doing.

Find someone who will let you try out the EMGs in another guitar or ask the shop your having the work done about atrial on the pickups. I've done this when switching from EMG 81s to 85s and then finally the 89s.

This is how I achieve my tone.
I have a Carvin FET1000 with four cabinets.

USRG30 Ė EMG85 & EMG89
RG570 Ė 2 x EMG85
RG525 Ė 2 x EMG85

For my coloring effects I use:
ART SGX2000
BOSS SE-70
Digitech DSP-21 w/ dual processors
And a PC with Amplitube plugin

And then if your not happy, sell what you have and save up big time for the exact setup of the people you admire; lol

And remember this one last thing, not everyone likes the tonal qualities EMGs give to your guitar. Itís a matter of preference.

Thanks sporatic.

Your reply is very good for me

By the way, the place I live now has not many dealers. The shop that sells Ibanez does not carry EMGs and the shop that sells EMGs does not carry Ibanez either. And I have limited edition RG and none of the shops has mine.

Anyway, I am coming to State very soon, would it be the good idea if I buy new basic guitar like ESP KH 202 and install EMG 81-85 on it?
Or am I just wasting money?

Thanks

Tough call

In your situation it looks like either way you try it's not going to be in your favor. I would suggest trying to purchase a guitar with the pickups already installed, hence, ESP, Pesa Suhr(Way to Expensive).
The other option is, if the guitar is a limited edition, go for buying an ESP and put some EMGs in it; this way your Ibanez retains it's original setup and you get the tone from your other "new" guitar to emulate the guitarists you really like.

Hope this helps.........
