Best S Series with HH?

Hey everyone--quick question here...

I've got a JS100 (yeah I know, flame away) but it has the upgraded Joe/Fred combo so it does okay for what I need. But what I REALLY love is that thin, rounded body shape.

So I'm Jonesing big time for another guitar. My Jackson experiment was a failure (DK2s with the Sustainiac...fun toy for a while but that body just doesn't fit me well) so I'm thinking S series. But which one gives me the most bang for my buck?

Want something in the HH configuration. Somewhere around $500 or less if possible. Suggestions?

Re: Best S Series with HH?

If you like thin bodies and HH configuration, consider a used Parker P-42. They can be found for under $400.

The necks may vary from guitar to guitar, though. And it will be hard to find parts.

And you're probably looking for an Ibanez but when you said you "REALLY love" the thin body that was the first thing I thought of.

Re: Best S Series with HH?

Looks cool, and I'm open to other brands if they have that thin-type of body, but trying to stick with something in the Super Strat category. So the Ibby S series seems like it fits.

Also forgot to add in my original post that 6 strings are what I prefer. I could probably go HSS if I had to, but I'd most likely end up pulling that middle pickup. Would never use it and it gets in the way. But then you got that cruddy looking hole...

I'd go for a used s1220, s1520, or s520 (older MIJ version).

Re: Best S Series with HH?

Thanks for the tip just4. Saw a 520 on Ebay with the flat green shadow finish. Very unique. But a 2006 model, which means made in Korea vs. Japan. How big of a difference am I looking at here?

Re: Best S Series with HH?

IMO there's a pretty huge difference. Not that every MIJ is exceptional, but the older s520 comes with a Wizard neck and an Edge, so it has a pretty good chance of being awesome.

I loved the nice, simple S420. Yes, the Indonesian one. It really was an awesome guitar. Especially in the oiled black finish.

Though the older, Japanese models are obviously better guitars.

Re: Best S Series with HH?

Seems like there's plenty of 520s to be found--mostly post MIJ era. But the 1220s and 1520s are few and far between.

Anybody have any experience with the Jackson Stealth line? Looks like a similar build...

Re: Best S Series with HH?

Stretch your budget and get an s2020xav or s2120xav. Like Ebay # 120989143117 (no affiliation).

The piezo bridge is REALLY cool. Definitely worth the upgrade.

Re: Best S Series with HH?

I have both a Saber and a Radius, and I can say I find the Radius all around nicer to play as far as comfort goes. The Saber is thin, yes, but I don't find it that much lighter than the radius due to the mahogany, and it does hurt a little bit on the leg after extended practice sessions. I would try and find a 540r, although getting an H-H of those is a lot harder.

540S, S540, 540R would all fit you and cant be found for $500 used, some in great condition.

Re: Best S Series with HH?

Looks like there was an S520 made in 2001-02 that looks really nice. Cool inlays and Edge bridge. I'd hold out for one of those.

Edit: Check that, even better!

A 1989 540SHH, the only year they made it. Great price, too: 180993060209

Sweet guitar. If I hadn't just traded for a US made San Dimas Pro Mod, I'd be all over that.
