Bought a used 7420: anomaly and questions.

Bought a used 7420. Took the neck off and it's stamped 7620 and has a skunk strip. My other 7620 does not have a skunk strip. Also the trem is a TRS but it has a pop in bar just like an edge. I know the difference beteween a TRS and Edge. This doen not seem right. What gives?

I'm not sure about the bridge, but I know there's a lot of RG7420s with 7620 necks.

And I wouldn't exactly call a free upgrade a problem

My 7420 is exactly the same - neck has skunk stripe but is marked 7620, and TRS has a push in bar, not screw in (although the bar is not the same as an edge, it has no plastic bushes). I don't know about the screw in bars, but with this push in one this TRS is really not bad at all - the trem arm is nice and tight, and you can do flutters, etc on it with no problem, and hasn't gone out of tune yet either. Lots of peple seem to hate the TRS but I can't see any problems with it, unless some are worse than others. With regard to the neck I'm sure that in the gallery pics on jemsite I've seen gun metal grey 7620's with a skunk stripe. So although my other 7620 doesn't have one, it seems like some did, and we both happen to have a 7420 with one of those necks on . As for the 'why?', I have no idea - maybe they just made too many 7620 necks and so fitted some to 7420's.

If you guys check out here: http://jemsite.com/axes/model/rg/rg7620.htm
You'll notice the grey 7620 has a stripe, i think they put it on later models, or something. As far as the TRS, they can range from decent to utter crap so you can get lucky from time to time. i've seen a few ibanez with the 'slide in bar' too, but i dunno which model it was offhand.

This bar has the white bushings on it. I can swap it right out with a known true edge bar. The TRem is actually pretty nice in comparison with the edge7 i also have..

7620's initially came without the stripe, but towards the end of production Ibanez introduced a neck with a skunk stripe. There's been some debate here as to whether or not anything else on the neck changed- some people have said that the intial neck, as described on the ibanez catalogue, had a "uv" profile, while later they moved to a wizard-7 whent hey changed to the stripe. I don't rememebr much abotu the debate, as this was ages ago, but I remember having my doubts put to rest that the 7620 did, in fact, have a neck profile that differs from the UV.

No, there was never a 7620 with a TRS trem. It always had the Lo-Pro-7.

the single most easy way to tell the difference between them besidse the bridge is the triangle pickups mounts the 7620 has.
