To buy or not to buy: Ibanez RG1527

Hey guys, this is my first post here.

I'm looking at purchasing a used RG1527. The paint is in pretty rough shape but structurally the guitar seems sound. My biggest concern with the guitar is the fretboard. The previous owner scalloped the fretboard and from what I have seen, didn't do a great job of it (in my opinion anyways).

Excuse the ever crappy picture.

The top one is what I would expect the scalloping to look like, but on this guitar it is more like the bottom one. It's kind of like a valley in the center that levels off towards the fret wire. This would be my first scalloped guitar so I know very little about it.

A guy at a local shop said to be careful with scalloping thin necks as it can cause structural issues.

This is the only picture I have of it. Sorry I have nothing better.

There is still plenty of wood left on the fretboard. I think if I were to buy it, I would have the scalloping redone professionally.

The guitar is being auctioned, so based on my description, would you buy it? And if so, up to what price would you consider it worth?

I wouldn't buy any guitar with a scalloped fretboard.

@djanggo - reasons?

@POS RG - do you just not like scalloped fret boards?

Based on your description, drawing and that one pic--I wouldn't touch it for more than $400.00

What is the condition of the rest of it? I see some nice dings in just that one photo.

Re: To buy or not to buy: Ibanez RG1527

Overall the condition is not too bad, there is a paint chip bigger than those ones down by the bottom strap pin. There are no cracks in the body or neck. The bridge is in good condition. All the electronics seem good, though they were all replaced, the pickups are supposedly dimarzios (dont know model) and it was rewired to a 5 blade switch )which seems really loose) and a single volume pot (tone was removed).

The one weird thing about it is that the high e string saddle was slid all the way forward. And because of that, the fine tuner didn't touch the saddle anymore, so they put a little stick in between the 2 to make them touch. I don't know what that is all about.

I wouldn't remove any wood from an area subject to compression under string tension. I feel it structurally compromises the neck, kind of like how they first cut a big divot out of a tree trunk to take it down...only 22-24 of them. But I'm not everyone else. Maybe others see a benefit to it. I don't.

There's a benefit but they are so much harder to play so they aren't exactly n00b friendly.

I wouldn't scallop my guitars either, they aren't for me.

Re: To buy or not to buy: Ibanez RG1527

The only really good part of a 1527 is the neck.......... This one lost that advantage.

Buy a new RG7421 or wait for a great condition 1527, but pass on this one for sure.

I'd love to say buy it.......... but you could still need a neck. Trust me, finding a 1527 neck for sale at a decent price is extremely difficult. I've been searching for 2 years now......... If you were to part out the 1527, the bridge/hardware would probably get your money back and then a little more.

If you want to keep it, you'll have to have a lot of luck on your side. Scalloping can be done VERY wrong. Unless you know the person that did it AND he's willing to back up his work with a warranty...... your just rolling the dice.
