Buying a guitar... 7-string or 6-string?

Hi everyone!

New to the forum. It seems pretty good though.
As you read on the title I'm going to buy a guitar these days.I play for 8 years and I think I should buy a good one at last...I searched and I decided that I like shechter very much,so I'm going to buy a Hellraiser. The thing is that I was considering of buying the 7-string one cause it acctually has something more compared to a 6-string and nothing less...so I thought:"Why not?"
But the guys at the shop i went to told me that I should buy a good 6-string cause with the 7-string will be imposible to play all styles of music, due to it's big neck...They seem kind of convincing cause if I buy a seven string, they would have more profit...Although I haven't tried a 7-string by myself, the shop had ran out of them...
So i wanted to hear a second opinion about this!Should i buy a 6-string or a 7-string?I have a really good guitar even though i have 5(3 classic,an acoustic and an electric guitar) and I've been playing for 8 years.
Thank you all in advance

This must be one of the most stupid statements I've ever heard...It seems that these guys think that 7 strings are only for metal...Check John Pizzarelli (7 string jazz guitarist). Check the acoustic part in the begining of Dream Theater's A Change of Seasons. Check Muse's Citizen Erazed.
Anything that can be played on a 6 string can be played on a 7 string as well.
Now it just comes down to what you like. If you find it comfortable. I guess that since you're used to classic guitars you'll have no trouble at all.
Try a 7 string and decide for yourself, rather that getting convinced by others.

They said the word "impossible"(about playing any kind of music with a seven-string,due to difficulty)...I would have tried one there but they will come up with new 7-strings at March...
Thanks Aris_T

+ 100000 In my opinion, 7-strings are MORE versatile than 6-strings. That extra string adds a lot of posibilities. Those guys think that 7-strings are only for metal, which is NOT true.

Re: Buying a guitar...

Get a 7. Just because other people haven't played classic rock on them or whatever, doesn't mean that you can't.

Re: Buying a guitar...

The only reason the guys at the store said what they did was probably because they were out of 7's and wanted you to buy a guitar and get out.

Though I have heard that Schecter 7's have really big and fat necks, so you might want to look at a different company if you are a guy who is really addicted to the style and feel of an ultra thin neck. That said, the Jeff Loomis model probably has a thinner neck than other shecter 7's. Don't quote me on that though.

I got me a 7 String Ibanez Universe (Green Dot) and I totally love it. Its a fantastic guitar and I can play anything on it that I can on the 6 string. It just took a little getting used to. I can't say anything about a Schecter 7 string, I find Schecters to be cheap guitars and i am not a big fan.

Re: Buying a guitar...

Thanks everyone!!!Before buying anything,I'll try a seven-string,but I'am pretty convinced that I will prefer the 7-string one...By guitar teacher also said to me that I'won't have any major problems cause I am pretty used to Classic guitars necks too.
Thanks again for your immediate responses!!

i second that. you should try out the esp sc models or the higher end stef models. They are absolutely amazing. Try the Sc-607 or sc-607b they are the sig. model from stephen carpenter of deftones great guitars. but ibanezs are good too.
