Buying a Mexi-Strat Wanted to know if it's real

I've been looking for a cheap guitar on craigslist so I can swirl it and do some other cool stuff to it. I saw it said fender guitar and assumed it was a squire and it ended up being a Mexican Fender Strat. I personally have no knowledge of what real strats look like compared to fake strats. So naturally I turn to the guitar forum.

Here are the pictures that the fellow has sent me.

Also, the serial number says it was made in 96-97. I have Absolutely no Intention on swirling this guitar at all, or using it as a project guitar.
And Lastly, It's only $50. Which is why I'm skeptical as to if it's real or not.
Thanks for any help. Do you think it's a good price for a MIM Strat?

Looks real to me. There are periods when the quality of the MIM Strats are quite good. The necks now are all made in the US Factory in Corona. Not sure if this was the case in 97. For $50 it should be a good deal.

For 50 bucks I wouldn't even think about it. It looks like a clean guitar. Some pitting on the tuners, probably means there's some freatwear, but I wouldn't mind.

Re: Buying a Mexi-Strat Wanted to know if it's real

I just bought the guitar. It's has a few problems; static when turning the knobs, fretwear(or black stuff on the frets. I don't know if that is fretwear or not as I've never seen a guitar with fretwear.), needs new strings... BAD, need's two new screws on the pickgaurd, the intonation needs to be fixed, and I think that's all. But those are all just minor problems and could be fixed with a days work. Except the Frets.

To add to that, I had no idea how big a Strat neck was I thought it'd be similiar to my strat knockoff, but I'm okay with it having that thick of a neck. I really like this guitar and how it sounds. And for $50? Definetly worth it.
