Bye Bye '87 Pro 540R, Hello '92 RG-550 Deluxe!!!

Sold the '87 Ibanez Roadstar Pro 540R BlueBurst just over a week ago and used the proceeds to pick this up on Friday via a CL Deal...

1992 Ibanez RG550 Deluxe - MIJ, Laser Blue/Blue Mirrored Pickguard, Cosmo Chrome Hardware, Ibanez Edge Pro Tremolo. Believe it was the last year for the "Square Heel" Neck too. It's a good one with very little wear; everything is assembled nicely and lines up perfectly centered on the fretboard. Plays very smoothly as an old RG550 should!!!

Keep the pups in it.....just switch the magnets around (bridge to neck/neck to bridge) You'll be amazed, and it's FREE!!!!!!

Re: Bye Bye '87 Pro 540R, Hello '92 RG-550 Deluxe!!!

Congrats! Nice looking axe!

I've never tried the magnet switch, but I was super happy after throwing a Dimarzio Breed into the bridge of my '91 550dx (same color, but gold pickguard, haha). I plan on changing the neck PU sometime too. Mine had the V1 & V2 pickups though.

I also had to add some foil shielding to get rid of some pesky hum. One of these years I'll get around to the headstock crack

Turn the pickups around in their current positions...is that what you are saying to do?

No no, swap the magnets out. The V8 bridge comes with an alnico 5, and the V7 neck comes with a ceramic. I did some experimenting, and swapping the magnets make for much more useful pickups. The mud of the V8 is gone once you swap to the ceramic magnet, plus you get faster attack and greater clarity. The V7 neck is less searing and easier to use with the alnico 5 magnet.

Re: Bye Bye '87 Pro 540R, Hello '92 RG-550 Deluxe!!!

Thanks for the recommendation/information, but I've got a Vintage Gibson Dirty Fingers that will wind up in the bridge, just need to figure out what to put in the neck and mid positions...considering the following combo at present: SD '59 or DiMarzio PAF Pro Neck/SD Twangbanger Middle/Gibson Dirty Fingers at present.

Try the magnet swap first. You may be surprised.

I decided to try this and once I did, I never put the Evo's I had back in my 1550.

They are sitting in their boxes waiting for a friend of mine to buy them from me.

I like the V7, V8 magnet swap that much.

I now think that the magnets somehow got mistakenly switched in the specs when these were designed, they are that good with the magnet swap.

Plus I like how it looks totally stock, but then my Ibanez dis-liking friends hear it and are surprised at how good it sounds.

That's not an Edge Pro, that's a Lo-Pro Edge.
