Can you help identify my guitar?

Hello everyone,

First off, Happy New Year and best wishes for a great 2016!

I'm hoping you can help me figure out exactly what my trusty old guitar is. I purchased it new in 1990 at a shop in the suburbs of Philadelphia. It's an RG of some sort, manufactured in 1989 with serial number F925869 on the headstock.

It seems like it might be a prototype for an RG770, since it is an HSH setup with pickup rings and no pickguard. It has an Edge tremolo on it.But, it doesn't seem to match up exactly with what I remember from the catalogs at that time. It's a basswood body, with a flamed veneer of some kind on the front and back, and the color is a sort of amber/orange. It has a rosewood, bound sharktooth fingerboard on a maple neck, with a black headstock. The pickups are F1(neck), C1 (middle), F2(bridge). I've attached pics as well.

Anyone have any more information on what I bought all those years ago? It doesn't seem to quite fit into any model description that I can find from that time.

Thanks for your help!
Andrew

Very nice guitar agtsf. It's certainly a good way to introduce yourself to Jemsite. Welcome aboard man!!

It's definitely a 770FM but it's interesting that it doesn't have a burst and it also has the F1/F2 combo. Normally all the 770's had an F2 bridge and an F4 neck.

Yeah, interesting indeed. Not familiar with that finish at all, and I like it!

Re: Can you help identify my guitar?

Thanks for the help guys!

I agree, it does look like a 770FM without the burst and with odd pickups. The color looks like the "base" color for the Cherry Sunburst finish, without the burst laid over it (is that how that paint scheme is done?).

I remember when I bought it the salesman giving me some line about how they occasionally got odd versions of guitars that Ibanez was doing. I assumed he was just feeding me a line, but maybe he was right. Maybe it is some sort of test of what became the standard 770FM, before they decided on the F4/F2 combo.

Now another question - I've gotten back into this guitar again, and I've been giving it a cleanup and check. I notice that the pickup rings on this guitar are both angled toward the neck so the pickup is not flat. Is this it should be on this guitar or is this another random parts issue, and should I change the rings for flat ones?

Thanks!

Re: Can you help identify my guitar?

He was probably telling you the truth. Back in the day, it wasn't uncommon for the guitars that went through the Bensalem shop to have some variation to the catalog models. This was also true of the USA customs. They weren't playing "fast and loose", but they did have a little "artistic license" with what they worked on. I'm not surprised to see your guitar like this......just interested. It's probably the nicest 770FM I've ever seen.

Re: Can you help identify my guitar?

I've seen similar looking 770FM tops mainly in the japanese market, but yeah this one is beautiful!

It reminds me of the alder bodied RG570 CTAM, but with pickup rings and black hardware instead of gold - here's a link to one that's had a hardware swap:
