This can't be legal?

Just saw this site advertised on TV http://www.guitarworx.com.au/product...uitar-Kit.html - they have a 'Gem' guitar with a very strange likeness to an Ibanez Jem..........strange...........

It is a good thing that it is not called a Jem or they may be up for a copyright infringement..........

Re: This can't be legal?

Looks the same as the BYOG kits. Just sanded down Chibas.

Re: This can't be legal?

Looks like a tribute guitar.

It's the "missing link" between the praised tribute and the frowned upon Chibanez. I wonder how the quality is, can't expect much for $150. No, I will not buy a kit to find out!

Just wondering, is that because it can't be good for that kind of money, or have you actually tried one?

It's an assumption based on the idea that all things Chinese are bad.

Without actually owning one, I'd guess that these are as "good" or "bad" in terms of quality as any other guitar kit. You get what you pay for.

A huge difference in price if the worker gets $1 per unit made, or $100 per unit made. Add to that different taxes for this and that. The very same worker making the same kit with the same wood would cost a lot more if it was made in another country than China. I doubt the added cost would make a difference in the finished product.

Ah well, we (a norwegian forum) might have an interesting thing going on with a "forum special" order from a chinese factory. Waiting for the prototype to arrive, so it's far from done yet, but it is our little test to see if chinese year 2011 is the same as chinese year 2001.

Re: This can't be legal?

has anyone tried one? if not then how can you assume its bad?

It really irks me when people put stuff down they have never even touched.

Until someone ponies up the cash and give us all a good idea of what they got then no one has an honest opinion.

I agree with this, even though I have issues with the legality of the product.

Is it going to be Ibanez quality? Of course not. However I believe the kit is probably worth exactly $150. The pickups are going to suck, the trem is going to be extremely low-end, etc. But I don't think that it's really going to be that much different from a Saga kit in terms of quality.

Re: This can't be legal?

My initial question was more related to the issue of legality rather than a question of quality.

However it would be fair to say that, as dcord has suggested, that it will not be at the same quality of a genuine Ibanez - this is most likely true given that it is a 'build it yoursel'f guitar -and you do get what you pay for.

What really annoys me is when people buy these kits, put on an Ibanez sticker and try to flog them off as a genuine Ibanez on online auction sites and uneducated (in guitars and Ibanez products) buyers pick them up.
