Cheap RG NGD - Questions about LFR!

Hey guys, I've mostly just lurked around here, but figured I'd start a NGD thread anyway! Plus I've got a couple of questions that I'm sure a few of you guys will be able to answer.

I scored this RG470 from craigslist for $70. It's seen better days, that's for sure. Missing knobs and back cavity plate. One massive chip of paint on the side (can actually see some exposed wood!!!), and some paint in the process of falling off on the back. Dirty, dusty and abused. The LFR really sucks, too.

That brings me to my questions. This is a Made in Japan RG470. According to the serial number, it was made in Fujigen in 2001. I've tried to do my research, and it seems that these have a Japanese Wizard neck. Can anyone confirm or disconfirm this?

Also, this should have a Lo-TRS trem, right? That seems to be what I've read. However, I've seen pics of Lo-TRS trems, and they have an Ibaneze logo and "Lo-TRS" imprinted on the side of the trem. The one on my RG doesn't say that. It just says Licensed by Floyd Rose -- nothing else. It's single-locking.

I'm just curious if anyone can shed some light on the neck and the trem on this thing. Oh yeah, and if you have any tips on how to remove the paint -- sand vs. heat vs. strip -- that'd be awesome too!

I don't have enough posts to put up pics! Maybe once I fix her up...

2001 MIJ RG470's all have LO TRS trems (double locking) I think + Wizard II neck and V7,S1 and V8 pickups. Any chance you can post the serial number?

Sure. The s/n is F0142483.

The trem is a "speedloader" type where the string is fed through the back and the ball-ends are not clipped.

The previous owner has replaced the trem with a nasty single locking trem then. Certainly didn't come with that!

Thats the tremolo that was on the 200 series of guitars, usually korean made instruments, looks like you may just have a parts guitar. I would assume your guitar may have been one of the few 470s with an edge and someone slapped the single locking tremolo in there. Pictures of the tremolo route would give us more insight but ultimately its hard to go wrong with a 70 dollar guitar.

It's a 2001 serial number, so it didn't come with an Edge. It would have had the LO-TRS trem, the much better built brother of the LO-TRS II.

Thanks for the comments so far, guys.

I was also thinking this was either a parts guitar or someone was crazy enough to swap out the Lo-TRS for a single-locker.

If I took off the neck, would there be something written on the neck cavity that would tell me something about the origin of the body? That might help me determine whether or not it's a mutt.

That's your best bet. The RG model number should be stamped in the neck pocket.

Re: Cheap RG NGD - Questions about LFR!

I went to install a double-locking LFR I bought and unfortunately it didn't fit. I'd need to start hacking away at this thing, which I'm not sure I'm willing to do.

I detached the neck while I was at it, and this is what I found:

The neck has "RG550R#2" stamped on it.
The body has "Oct 98" stamped on it.

I know next to nothing about Ibanez' (which is why I'm here!), but I'm assuming that means this guitar has had a bit of an overhaul. Is it even an RG470? Any way of knowing?

Re: Cheap RG NGD - Questions about LFR!

You shouldn't need to hack away at the cavity. Is it just not quite fitting? Use some sand paper, or a dremmel if you have access to one, and sand out the cavity to you needs and should be right.

It may not be an RG470, but who knows, hard to tell.

Re: Cheap RG NGD - Questions about LFR!

Hey Phantom, thanks for the help so far.

I'd say it would require at least 1/16" (1.6mm) extra space to fit. Think I should just get a dremel and go at it? I'd hate to ruin this nice guitar...!

Re: Cheap RG NGD - Questions about LFR!

I've done it by hand with sand paper, and with a dremmel. If you are careful the dremmel should be pretty easy. Much faster than hand sanding.

Just use masking tape to mark out where you want to sand to. This should also help with stopping the paint from getting messed up. Once it's all sanded just spray paint the cavity black again, and it all should all be just right. Obviously when spray painting the cavity you want to mask up and cover the guitar so you don't end up with overspray everywhere.

Keep in mind you scored this for $70, plus the condition it is presently in, that you described. Nothing says making something your own by doing some swaps and mods!

True that, Nickelo.

Do you guys know if the "RG550R#2" means it's a Wizard II neck?

Re: Cheap RG NGD - Questions about LFR!

If it says RG550 on the neck it's probably a Wizard neck, not a Wizard II.
