Chevelle sound from RG Series

I know that Pete from Chevelle uses a PRS baritone guitar. Chevelle uses some very heavy sounds with low tunings (A, B, drop C and the like)

I have an RG2EX1. I should just be able to get thicker strings to get a sound close to that, right? The last time I tried to tune a guitar to something like that (before I had my RG), the strings just get too floppy and they buzz alot.

Tell me what you think...

Thanks - J

i dont think....i only use my instinct!

with a good amp and good tuned guitar with the right pickup you get a good sound.
figure out what you like and dont try to sound like something else.do you have a studio with 30 amps and a lot of effects/pedals/microphones/studio tech. and recorded and mixed and dubbed guitar track??its no comparisment. it cant be the same.so dont try it youll never get the same sound.so you said it your self.he have another guitar so here ends your question, amp?thats an instrument on its own.effects? did you thing of that?
seach internet.try a lot of stuff.and save money and buy stuff if your sure about what you want. thats fun too

Cool - thanks brianxtr!

I guess what I was asking was not so much about the effects, but more about my Ibanez's ability to get to those low tunings. The most I've ever done before was drop D. Here's a quote from Pete of Chevelle on what he uses:

"I used a bunch of guitars. I used Gibson Baritones. I used Fender Baritones. I used Paul Reed Smith Baritones. These are primarily the guitars that I use. I use really old or really new, really hard-to-find guitars called Baritone, which is a longer scale. We tune down to drop A# for most of these songs. Thatís really hard to do on a standard scale, so I have a guitar thatís being made specific."

I also saw somewhere that he uses a .72 on the low E. Holy Cow!!!!

Can I do this on my RG2EX1? Does it create more tension on the neck to use thicker strings? Do I risk permanently screwing up my axe?

Re: Chevelle sound from RG Series

You should be ok with doing this. Remember that even though you are going to need chunky strings that you will be tuning lower so the tension will even out.

You will most probably need to make some truss rod and intonation adjustments, and you may have to file out your nut slots a little too.

The stock pickups probably wont sound too crash hot with such a low tuning either. You will need to investigate pickups that work well with low tunings to get the best sound out of your guitar.

Sweet - thanks for the explanation. I'll take a look at all of that.
