Classic or Standard?

Hi Folks-
I am eying an LP Classic in a dark blue nitrocellulose finish. There is also the LP standard. Both are in the $1900 range...

Any advantages one have over the other?

Thoughts?
Thanks

Re: Classic or Standard?

Big difference is the chambering; if I recall correctly, the Classic isn't chambered, but weight-relieved. The Standard, I think does have the chambers. Check out this thread over at MLP forums:

Peace

Mike

Re: Classic or Standard?

What year is the Standard?
There were big changes on 2008 and I guess some changes in 2012. For $1900 your better off with the Standard. I've never paid $1900 for a Classic, even brand new. The going prices I've seen for Classics were in the $1200-$1400 range

$1900 too much for a classic huh? I am looking brand new. They seem to be about the going rates for new. There is a 15% discount today due to the 4th.

Re: Classic or Standard?

I didn't know they brought back the Classic. The last new LP I bought was in 07 or 08. I'd also say the Classic pickups aren't very good, and now they have a baked maple fretboard.

Personally, I'd buy a used Classic with a rosewood board. I have a feeling if Gibson ever starts using rosewood again all these backed maple guitar aren't going to be worth anything. LP players always want vintage spec instruments

Is it a real 15% off or is it the Guitar Center coupon where it says 15% off anything in big letters, then excludes anything you'd actually want in the small print?

If you are going to spend that much money you have a lot of choices on the used market too. I picked up a 1977 LP Custom for $2100 a few months back.

Re: Classic or Standard?

Thanks for everyone's comments and suggestions.

I made a mistake in my initial posting. I meant to say Classic or Traditional (not standard).
The Traditional is going for $1799 and yes those 15% coupons they typically come up with. With that it comes to about $1630 something out the door. Is that acceptable?
listening to your posts, I will stay clear of new Classics.
Thanks.

PS: just got back from GC. I want them to have the tech lower the strings a bit, so I said I would come tomorrow as the tech was not in house. They said they would still honor the $15%.

Re: Classic or Standard?

Btw- I bought a new EVH Wolfgang (MIJ) last month. The guitar is truly outstanding. Just trying to experiment with Gibsons now. Never owned one in 30 years of playing guitar.

Re: Classic or Standard?

i bought the traditional over the standard. they both sounded good. but the classic 57 pups sounded best to my ears. the traditional is weight relieved and the standard is chambered.

Thx.
I got the traditional last night. It was listed $1800. Got the 15% discount. Then traded in my ibanez RGT for $275. Out the door $1358. I am happy with the deal, but after playing it home I find the guitar to be pretty heavy. Playing seated - (don't play in a band) my right shoulder starts to ache. Also the heaviness seems to slide the guitar down from my lap. Am I going go have to get used to this? First time Gibson user here. I hope I don't have to return it.

Well, you're far from the first player to complain about the weight of a Les Paul. Yes, you'll have to get used to it, buy a wider strap with more padding, or get another LP. The Traditional has the weight relief holes, so you might to focus on chambered LPs and buy one of those. With more wood removed, they ought to be lighter.

Peace

Re: Classic or Standard?

Thanks for the explanation. I think I am getting used to it now. I will give it a week to see how I am able to to handle the beast. So far like the sound and playability.

Question on strings: The manual says it comes with 10s, but while playing they feel like 9s. Do LPs come with 10s?

Thanks.
