Confirm my doubts...

Finally spent some time with the new RG1550M last night and while I like the general tone of the pickups, they sounded kind of muddy to me (I DO have them backed down about 6mm). I'm pretty fickle so I want to make sure it's not just me.
I've read posts where many have said they hated the V8, V7 pickups. I compared it to the Super Distortion in my SAS and the Super was much brighter and articulate.
Now the SAS should be warmer because it is mahagony, so I don't want icepicks if I put them in the basswood RG (trying to save myself some work). What do you think?

Re: Confirm my doubts...

I hate the pups in mine. I am trying to decide what I want to replace them with. Probably the Crunch Lab / Liquifire combo, But am also looking @ Tone Tone.

6mm ?!?!?!?! Should be nearer 2mm, will sound much brighter and meaty.

Re: Confirm my doubts...

I love Tone Zone's in Ibanez RG's. I've tried the LQ/CL combo in my repainted 2620 and can't say I'm rightly feeling them. More testing is needed.

+1

Gotta agree on the Tone Zone! One of the best pickups ever for an RG.

Re: Confirm my doubts...

My new favorite combination in a basswood HSH style body is Steve's Special (bridge) + Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues 2 (middle) + Air Norton (neck).

I'm trying that out in an RG570 and I absolutely *love* the tone in all positions, but especially in position 2 for a gorgeous strat-like sound. I'll be using the same pickups in the new swirled "JEM" custom that I'm building.

Re: Confirm my doubts...

I put the original duobuckers back in the SAS last night and found that it is the guitar that is bright as the stock pickups sounded super bright as well. So I think I will try the Super Distortion in the RG1550M to see if I get the clarity I'm after. As for pickup height, back off the pickups should lower the gain and clean them up as opposed to raising them. I realize it will add a little bottom, but I'm OK with that.

I always swap out for dimarzios just cause I find it fun to do so, and the sound is always better for it...

Re: Confirm my doubts...

The V8 and V7 seem "ok" until you replace them with something else. Then you will see that they aren't as good as you thought they were (although they aren't horrible).

The only basswood Ibbys I have are an RG750 and RG550LTD which both have F2 bridge pickups which is pretty close to a tone zone. The necks have F2 and F4 respectively. The F4 is close to a PAF so I'd try that or the air norton.
