confusion with my 770

I posted another thread of the 92 770 I bought and am in the midst of swapping out the F2 and F4 pups for a white tone zone and white PAF Pro. Got the white fender knobs and white tip. Taking it to my luthier to have the frets dressed and setup.

So I was taking her apart tonight, took the neck off and was surprised to see "RG750" stamped on the neck. Then the body says "RG770" I checked the catalog scans at Rich's site and there is no Emerald Green color for the 770 listed. The only EG color is for the 760 which has the H-S-S. Mine has the H-S-H.

Stupid camera was out of focus.

Re: confusion with my 770

weird. I just looked at the 93 catalogs and there is an EG 770 in there. But my serial is for a 92 750 neck and there are no EG 750's. I'm totally confused here.

Re: confusion with my 770

I don't think it's uncommon for a guitar to have the serial number for the year before it was in the catalog - I've always assumed they had to build up some inventory before releasing the catalog. For example, you don't see a whole lot of RG550s with 1988 serial numbers, but there are a whole lot of 1987 serial number ones, and the first full catalog that had them was 1988 (although there is a rare supplemental 1987 tri-fold catalog that did have them in it). Anyway, I don't think there's necessarily anything odd there. Of course there's always the possibility the neck was changed at some point in the last 15 or so years because of the ol' locknut crack, but that's no big deal, if you like the guitar, then it doesn't matter. I've swapped a lot of necks around on older RGs.

Re: confusion with my 770

Oops I missed your other point that only the 760 had that color in 1992 (I should read better before posting...). Anyway, it's also common in those older ones to have colors that aren't in the catalog. For example, I've had at least 3 or maybe even 4 RG550s with 1987 s/n's that were Violet Pearl, and the 560 was the only one listed with that color in the catalogs. Also, I wouldn't get caught up in the model number on the neck, that's very common for them to be different - a lot of 570s had 550 stamped on the neck and so forth.

Re: confusion with my 770

this case is not new. some peoples have the same 'stamping' issue on their guitar.
the most simple explanation is : ibanez, or the people who manufacture ibanez guitars, in this case must be fujigen guys, they just made it simple, stamp the neck with rosewood, sharktooth, binding, any color, says...'750', then the assembly guy will do the rest. if the neck 'married' with H-S-H bodies with no pickguard, then it's become 770. if the neck 'married' with H-S-S bodies, then it become 760..and so on.
same thing with '550' '570' etc...

maybe they just don't have time to make the stamp for each individual model.

Re: confusion with my 770

Yup, they used to all come with the "WALRJ-T24" Stamp, regardless of model. Sorta like how lots of RG5xx necks are stamped RG550-R, and later RG470 MIJ Wizard II necks get a 550-II stamp.

You just have an "early" 1993 RG770 in EG, IMO. Just like I have an "early" 1989 RG750 in VP, that has an '88 SN#.
