Cort workers go on strike.

The newly-reformed popular
rock band Rage Against the Machine
has come out in support of striking
guitar makers in South Korea.

The companies are Cort and Cor-Tek,
which produce electric guitars in
much of the world. Workers at Cort
guitar plants in South Korea have
taken industrial action and brought
guitar making to a halt after years of
abuse.

Guitar workers at these companies
have worked under questionable
conditions in many parts of the
globe. Now, band members Zack de
la Rocha and Tom Morello
have come out in support of the workers.

The workers made the following
statement:
“The Cort and Cor-Tek guitar
workers of South Korea produced
guitars at Cort’s factories for famous
brands such as Fender and Ibanez for
decades, but were abruptly fired in 2007
for forming a union to change their
sweatshop-like conditions. Both Korea’s
National Labor Relations Commission
and the Seoul courts judged Cort’s mass
dismissal and the sudden closure of its
Korean factories to be illegal.
“The Commission and the courts also
found the company’s claim of financial
hardship to be false and fined the company.
However, despite these rulings,
Cort has used intimidation and violence
to secure forced resignations from the
workers to deny them unemployment
benefits and to retaliate against the union
through hired thugs. The workers’ case is
now in Korea’s Supreme Court.
“Cort Guitars has profited in the billions
of dollars from making guitars for
the global market. But at NAMM, the
guitar workers and supporters from all
walks of life will call on Cort, Fender and
Ibanez to respect basic worker rights
and re-open Cort’s illegally shuttered
factories.”

Re: Cort workers go on strike.

To me is pretty cool famous musicians taking part in that kind of stuff,I mean trying to use their prestige to do something good. The problem is we never know if news on the media are true or lies, right or wrong.
If I was a world famous musician I'd always be involved and things about nature, you know if we kill this planet there'll be no humans to save
Planet already started to swallow us and the next generations will pay our bills when nature/weather will be so unbalanced that it'll vanish us from the history.Only 1 meteoro vanished dinosaurs so imagine the whole planet attacking us......it'll be EPIC lol
I love nature and animals so I'd always try to use my prestige trying to help them playing concerts to raise money, maybe talking to people about it etc.
I'd never just play, make money, buy mansions and ferraris but..........do nothing.

So I always applaude those kind of artists who do something.
And again about media news, while John Travolta was flying his OWN plane full or medicines and food for people in Haiti(I guess cause I don't remember),media was talking about what he does(or not) with his ass............grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Thanks for the info cid,I don't like their music but I applaude what they're doing.

Re: Cort workers go on strike.

its sad they were treated that way. people always say that the Asian built guitars lack quality. well let me tell you something, those workers in my opinion make great instruments. i have 3 Indonesian built guitars, two of them ibanez RG's, and the other a squier vintage modified jazz bass, and have no comlaints about them. i really dont see why people complain about the quality. I hope the workers will get better working conditions, so that they can continue to make great, affordable guitars and basses.

If it can make noise, then it can make rock and roll that can change the world. I wouldn't call that a lack of quality. Ask Tom Morello.

..and I agree, I hope the workers get the good working conditions and wages they deserve!

Red face Re: Cort workers go on strike.

I say American run companies should bring the guitar shops back to the USA and employ some of our guys... Maybe you have to pay them a bit more and bring down the price cutting into their "profit" but it's wrong to expect Americans to pay for sweatshop guitars at such a great profit! I think if more American companies (and not just guitar ones) started giving a damn about America, things wouldn't be so bad...

They might still be bad, but at least we'd be working for ourselves!

The flip side to that is that Americans have to get their heads out of their @sses, get a real work ethic, and show up for their jobs!!

That's it! it's bad work ethic, it has nothing to do with lower work safety standards, lower environmental standards and te ability to pay workers in poor countries pennies an hour.

The guitars are affordable because of low wages and poor working conditions.
