My red/white/black Charvel EVH is driving me nuts. Actually, its just the D-Tuna. I have had D-Tunas before and for some reason this one is just not stable. Maybe the spring in it is bad. I tune it to E and then pull the D-tuna to drop it into D and it goes into D and then I push the D-Tuna back in and it goes to E flat. The strings have been on the guitar for a couple of days and I strenched them out so I know thats not it. I do know how to set D-tunas and have done it before but this one I'm thinking about taking off of the guitar.

There should be a little allen key screw in the side of your D-Tuna, you might need to make some adjustments to it (this screw acts like a fine tuner, moves up and down to sharpen or flatten the string). When it's in tune in D, push the D-Tuna in and tighten the screw to raise the pitch to E and that should do it.

make sure the trem doesn't float. since its on the EVH, it should be flush mounted. i have had them before as well as aftermarkets. i put them on old kramers which had non recessed floyds. i had to use a tremsetter to "block" the trem. easier to reverse than blocking and looks better, too.

I tried that and it worked. For some reason, I thought you were supposed to tune it to E and then pull the D-Tuna and fine tune to D w/ the small allen screw. I had it backwards.

By the way, I was in the local store the other day and asked the Fender rep that happened to be there if an affordable EVH would be coming out again after the $25k Frankenstrats and he said probably not. Granted $2200-$2700 is a lot to pay for a guitar with only a bridge pickup in it, but it's a lot more affordable than $25K! It's too bad if Eddie doesn't do another affordable signature. These signature guitars are getting out of hand ($25k Frankenstrats, $6k 20th Jems). The Frankenstrat is historically known as a POS that Ed managed to get to sound great and charging $25k is crazy to me. Whats next?!...Hoshino gonna try to pull off a $20k Donnie reissue?!

I am not being snide, just my opinion. What is the point of having a Floyd Rose if you can't float it? I had the D-Tuna and installed it with similar results in a mexi-strat. I resold the guitar after 2 weeks of tuning hell. I just don't find it advisable to muff with the Floyd Rose trem. It seems to like to be floating flat. That way if it is perfectly tuned and intonated you can wang on the whammy bar and do bends, but not mess with the tuning. Just my experienve YMMV.

I have enev noticed that dropping to D on other guitars makes the other strings go out of tune just a little bit. Maybe you need 2 guitars?

I think having it non-recessed with heavy, tight springs allows you do bends without the other strings going flat. I like having some pull up on my floyds personally but after owning a Wolfgang with the D-tuna factory installed on the flush mounted floyd, I thought it was a really cool feature if you use drop D at all. I just missed not having pull up like I do on my Ibanez floyd style axes.

It's just a matter of physics. If you drop the tuning on one string so that you can play a lower note, the tremolo springs will be "unopposed" and will naturally pull at the bottom of the bridge until the forces equal out. You can't use it without blocking the trem in some way.

The d-Tuna is a pretty cool idea. Maybe eventually they'll come out with a version of the d-Tuna that has a trem with a small lever on it so that you can block and unblock the trem with a flick of a switch. Pull it one click to block the trem, pull it two clicks to fully lock it into a hard tail configuration. You would need the Sperzel type of Detuners in order to make use of the fully floating trem configuration.

That's what you get a Tremol-no for!
