Re: the death of the 7 string - why 7 string popularity is falli

If anything, I think in the last two years sevens are on the rise, thanks to bands like Nevermore, Ra, and Unearth... Maybe I'm biased because I haven't spent much time in Guitar Centers lately (I'm pretty thoroughly in love with my current rig, I haven't felt the need to go amp shopping in two years now), but I also think they're moving away from their "Oh, that's only good for nu-metal" reputation as well.

Hell, I play low gain bluesy, prog-y, shred-y stuff on mine.

It's sad that it gained that reputation. And I really hated that attitude from people, associating any guitar with lower sonic capabilities with nu-metal. An extra string means increased possibilities, not neccessarily a step toward the simplicity of nu-metal.

Re: the death of the 7 string - why 7 string popularity is falli

I don't think i actually play my 6strings that much anymore, i don't have the desire to to be honest as anything i can do on a i can do on a 7. And I don't think 7strings are dying either. With petrucci using one regularly, satriani breaking one out and people like rusty cooley playing 8+ strings the shred market is pretty much bombarded with 7+ strings, while on the other side bands like Nevermore, Morbid Angel and the qwhole thrash/death metal contingent have a fair few bands that use 7 strings so their appeal is wide spread.

And as drew said, the connection with just nu-metal is definately dissapearing, and has all but gone.
