Difference between 3xx and 4xx?

Is there a difference between identical parts on these guitars?

For example, I played an RG471 with a Wizard III neck and the neck felt very good and had smooth frets along the edge of the neck.

I played an RG350 with a Wizard III neck that had rough frets along the edge of the neck. Was that one just a lemon?

Do the 4 series guitars get better treatment than the 3 series even though they have some of the same parts?

What is the difference between 3xx and 4xx?

The difference between 3xx and 4xx is quality and a little more attention to detail, hence the price difference. Frets finished off a bit better etc.

So all Wizard III necks are not the same.

Interesting.

Better features. That's it. And not even better either. Just different.

Sharktooth inlays
Cosmo-chrome hardware color

I think that's it actually. Everything else is the same.

The RG350 and RG471 both had sharktooth inlays

That's because it's an RG350DX

The "DX" stands for delux. So it's the delux RG350. That's why the normal RG350M's don't have them.

I think for the most part it's features and pickups. 3xx will have INFs, 4xx will have Vs.

Necks and bodies will pretty much be the same. Luck of the draw with fretwork, etc.

Re: Difference between 3xx and 4xx?

Any guitar can have protruding fret ends. As the wood shrinks, the frets can be felt. It is an easy fix.

Re: Difference between 3xx and 4xx?

So there should be no difference between Wizard III necks on 3 series vs 4 series, and regardless of which one you get, its luck of the draw.

Good point about INFs vs. Vs.

Correct, the neck should be the exactly the same. Of course there's different tolerances in the different machines that carve these necks. The same goes for fretboards, frets....etc. I think the frets are mechanically finished on the 3xx/4xx guitars...that could also lead to different feeling frets. Tarac also pointed out that different environmental factors could lead to protruding frets on one and not the other.

Re: Difference between 3xx and 4xx?

Ok cool. I was just curious if the same necks got different treatment on the two series but it sounds like that's not the case.

^^^This!
3xx's and 4xx's will need more love out of the gate than Premiums or Prestiges.
V's are better than INF pickups, though the RG471 and RG470 both come with INFs. The nice Guitar Center RG450 in Candy Apple comes with V's I think. Probably just as well if they come with INFs if you're planning on changing out the pickups unless you do the Phantom V mod.

The RG450MDX? That one comes with Vs. I see it on MF's website. Is that like a MF exclusive? I haven't seen it anywhere else.

The 4 level S series also come with INF 1 and 2s.

I think MF has some kind of deal with Guitar Center. Usually GC's exclusive guitars show up there too. GC does have a few in-store exclusives though. I think you can spot the same RG450MDX on Guitar Center's website too.

Oh you're right, it's on their site, too.

Looks like a nice guitar. It'd be cool to see one in store and try it out.
