Difference between 550 and 770?

I'm realy confused about the differences between all these Ibanez guitars. There's so many of them.

What is the difference between the RG550 and the RG770. Which is the better guitar?

thanks

Re: Difference between 550 and 770?

well, tons of info on 550 and 770 on this site alrady, if you spend some times to take a look, sure you'll find the answer.
but just brief explanation :
RG 550 ,mostly ( most famous) by maple board, dot, V series pickups made by maxon japan.
RG 770, mostly rosewood, sharktooth, Ibz-USA pickups ( made by dimarzio).

which one is better?
you'll decide.

Neither is really better, but people have their preferences. 770 is rear routed, and has a bound rosewood board with inlays. 550 is top routed, with a plain maple board with dots.

I would put it this way; roughly 87-93 all 24 fret
550: RG body basswood, wizard maple neck w/maple fretboard; V series pickups, pickguard, edge trem
550R: RG body basswood, wizard maple neck w/ rosewood fretboard; V series pickups, pickguard, edge trem
570: RG body basswood, wizard maple neck w/ rosewood fretboard; V series pickups, no pickguard, edge trem
750: RG body basswood, wizard maple neck w/ rosewood fretboard bound and sharktooth inlays; ibanez/dimarzio pickups, pickguard, edge trem
770: RG body basswood, wizard maple neck w/ rosewood fretboard bound and sharktooth inlays; ibanez/dimarzio pickups, no pickguard, edge trem
770 DX: RG body basswood, wizard maple neck w/ maple fretboard bound and sharktooth inlays; ibanez/dimarzio pickups, clear pickguard, edge trem

I beleive that in their day the 750/770/770dx were upgrade models to the 550/570 with bound necks and ibanez/dimarzio pickups. However, all of the above are excellent guitars and play very similarly, the key is to find one with a straight neck and minimal wear in a model and color you like.

look at the catalog years 87-93 here to get an idea

just my 2 cents

Pretty much sums it up nicely the 700 series were the higher price guitars, but it's really down to preference over cosmetics of sharktooth inlay and such. lots of people change pickups on any of these guitars, the 500 series especially so.

Re: Difference between 550 and 770?

I have a 550, 565 and 770 and they all rock! haha. I guess the real issue is what you prefer. Maple/rosewood frets, dots/sharkfins, pickguard/no pickguard.

Either way they are ALL great axes.

Re: Difference between 550 and 770?

Thanks for all the replys guys. It does seem to me that the 550 is more common. Is this the case? I see them on the bay all the time, but hardly ever do I see the original 770. Is it considered rare or something? I've been looking for one for a while.

Re: Difference between 550 and 770?

550's are always available. The 770DX is harder to find but not impossible. The 565 is rare and the 565 Prototype is impossible to find

Yea, I see the 770DX pretty often. But not the original 770.
