Difference in V2 pups

OK, I have my 89 RG570 with the factory V2 in the bridge and it rocks...I mean it rocks hard, great awesome tone especially when distorted. Then I have my 91 RG560 also with the factory V2 in the bridge but it is really lacking when it comes to tone...no where near as good sounding as the one in the 570. The visual difference in the 2 pups is the pole pieces. The 89 one has flat head screw pole pieces and the 91 has allen head pole pieces. Anyone else ever notice a big difference in the different years of V2 pups?

Re: Difference in V2 pups

do a search for the V1s and V2 within this forum. Someone note down the output value of the pick ups before. A magnet swap on the pick ups from alnico to ceramic makes them sound a lot better tho.

Re: Difference in V2 pups

Perhaps different metal was used for the magnets, different number of windings, difference in Inductance etc., quite amazing even in the days of mass production that you can still by and large get two identical pickups that will sound different.

Companies like to play around with amount/quality/density of metals used, wire gauge, no. of windings etc. in order to keep the spreadsheets balanced for the boardroom

Agree with what you say about the early RG stock pickups though, I tried a DY 550, think it may have been an '88 or '89, stock p/ups, especially bridge, rocked.

Here's a list of DC resistances for some stock Ibby pickups. The hex poles version you mention appears from the one listed below to be less hot than the ones with slot head poles.

Hmm the setup in my 87 rfr sounds just like a paf pro. Unfortunately none of the other rgs I have have the v2 still. I enjoy it immensely. I only wish it had a bit more output is all.

Try out a ceramic magnet, or maybe Alnico 8. May find exactly what you want there.

Re: Difference in V2 pups

Huh, I wasn't aware there were such differences over the years. I love the stock pickups in the 20th anniversary RG550, but I have nothing really to which to compare them.

Peace
