different wizard necks

besides the 22 vs 24 frets, was there a difference in the width of the wizard neck on the 540S versus the RG's of the same timeframe? i played a 540S at one point and it felt a bit less wide than the wizard on an RG. was my mind playing tricks on me?

i didnt buy the S because it was totally beat to hell.

No I feel the exact same way. I dislike RG's because of that (brought up on sabers, so the rg wizII necks feel strange to me for some reason).

specs are the same on paper though, so it is a mystery (i.e. whats the difference between JS and JSp necks? lol)

Re: different wizard necks

A 1990 catalog claims them to have the same nut width and same thickness at the 1st and 12th fret. The S neck is claimed to be 56mm wide at the 22nd fret and the RG neck is supposedly 57mm wide at the 24th fret. It seems unusual that the neck would grow by a mm in under an inch, so perhaps the S neck is straighter and that's what you're feeling.

Re: different wizard necks

Your mind was not playing tricks on you. The neck widths have changed on both RGs and S series guitars over the years. I had an S540 years ago and the neck definitely wasn't as wide as the neck on my RG. I have a new RG and the neck is most definitely wider than my older RG. Now all the new S series & RG necks are 58mm at the last fret, which is wider than the older necks and in my opinion less comfortable to play. I wish they would offer necks on the S series and RG guitars with widths less than the current 58mm. My point being that they have definitely changed the widths over the years so you almost have to investigate it by year and model because the widths have definitely changed - for example:

Early 90s Ibanez catalogue 540s neck dimensions:
43mm at nut
57mm at 22nd fret
17mm at 1st fret
20mm at 1st fret

Late 90s Ibanez catalogue 540s neck dimensions:
43mm at nut
56mm at 22nd fret
17mm at 1st fret
20mm at 1st fret

Current Ibanez catalogue regular S series neck dimensions (Wizard III)
43mm at nut
58mm at last fret
19mm at 1st fret
21mm at 1st fret

Current Ibanez catalogue S Prestige guitars neck dimensions (Super Wizard):
43mm at nut
58mm at last fret
17mm at 1st fret
19mm at 1st fret

Re: different wizard necks

well i definitely played an early 90's 540S. That is why i paid particular attention to the feel.... It was definitely the sweetest neck i ever felt. i should have pulled the trigger and fixed it up....oh well i already have too many guitar projects....
