DiMarzio CrunchLab + Liquifire in old Petrucci Ibanez JPM100? Anybody done this?

HI. I have a related thread about upgrading pickups in RG520 (http://www.jemsite.com/forums/f18/wh...-a-109251.html), but now I'm considering moving Steve's Special and Air Norton from JPM into RG, and upgrading the JPM to brand new CrunchLab + LiquiFire. So, I'm wondering if anybody has done that and what the outcomes are.

I would expect that the new "petrucci" pickups would work in an old "petrucci" guitar, especially considering that he kept SS/AN for a while in MusicMan, before he switched to D-sonic and then to CL. But before I go ahead with this and try it out, I thought I'd ask the collective wisdom of the jemsite community?

What say you? Upgrade the JPM pickups OR leave it in original setup (while upgrading the RG only)?

Thanks!

It would work, and sound great. I have that combo in an RGT220A, but the body on mine is Ash, it still sounds fantastic. Being that the LF/CL sound awesome in the standard EBMM JP6 w/ Basswood bodies, the JPM100 also has Basswood, so the tones would be the same, or very similar.

For what it's worth, keep in mind, if you do decide to do this, your JPM will no longer be a JPM, even if you decide to sell it. It's no longer stock, but modified. I'm not sure how collectors would appreciate a modified JPM with the pickups other than what came with the signature specs. If I were you, I'd leave them in there as the SS and AN are fantastic for that guitar. If you do swap them, keep the stock pups, either in the case or someplace for it to always be included or swapped back in the event you do ever decide to part ways with the guitar.

Now, you are like me, If I were to buy a JPM modded with newer JP pups, but had the stock ones to got with it, I'd buy it and leave them in there, like you plan to do.n

Good point. I haven't thought much about trying to preserve the original JPM in its true form, but I guess that's something to consider. It is a collectible item, more or less, but at the same time, it's my main guitar, too, and one that does not just hang off the wall. It goes to practice and gigs every time (although I don't have frequent gigs).

Either way I would certainly keep SS/AN around, if nothing else. Thanks for the advice.

So, MusicFriend has Crunch Lab and LiquiFire SET for a little bit of a discount (when compared to buying individually).

But I'm having trouble figuring out which option to order when it comes to F-spacing. I know it's not a big deal, but I might as well get the most appropriate fit. They only list two options:

- Black for 43mm nut
- Black for 42mm nut

It doesn't say "F-spaced" or not. I would assume that's what they're referring to, though. But if I assume that they mean 42mm nut = standard pickup and 43mm nut = F-spaced pickup, then that doesn't make sense, because JPM has a 42mm nut. I'm pretty sure that F-spaced would be more appropriate for a trem-equipped Ibanez, right?

Anybody know what mfiend means by 42mm/43mm nut in choosing a pickup?

f-spaced for bridge, standard for neck.

OK, I'm going with the one for 42mm nut, as I believe that means F-spaced bridge with standard neck.

They're on backorder though, supposedly until tomorrow. Could've been worse, but still...

The pickups are in! Sounds good! I had trouble with my laptop recording some clips using my Mesa amp (at my band's practice space), so here are some clips recorded using Boss GT-6 direct in my computer:

Excuse my crappy playing, it was just messing and riffing around to give you a sense of how this thing sound now. It sounds BETTER in a real amp, but it's not bad either in the GT-6 using 5150 amp modeler.

EDIT: forgot to say that the on Count of Tuscany intro one (clip #4), I'm only playing the lead guitar. The backing stuff is original DT from their instrumental version of the same song (which doesn't have lead).

I don't really care for the Steve's Special in my P3 or P1 so I'm goin with Tone Zones. Don't worry too much about it not being as collectable and what not because its just pickups. You're not modifiying the guitar physically in anyway that you can't put it back to 100% stock if need be.

When I swapped out the D Sonic because I hated it, for an EVO in my white JP6 years ago I got flamed on the EBMM forum. Some guys actually said they would never buy the guitar because the pickup was changed....thats freakin retarded IMO. I"m also not going to hang on to the original pickups just incase I'm gonna sell it. I'll sell them now then if I think its such a big deal for a sale I'll buy the original pickups and put them back.

I agree. I put the SS and AN into my RG520, thus improving it a lot over V7/V8, but I can still take them out and put back into the JPM if it comes to that.
