Dimarzio/Ibz pickups

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new Prestige RG, either the RG2550E, RG2620CBL, or RG3120.....not sure which yet. I'm wondering about the pickups, though. How do these 2006 model Dimarzio/Ibz pickups sound compared to, let's say, Dimarzio PAF Pro's & Ibanez V7/S1/V8 rig? None of my local dealers have any of my choices in stock, just the Korean stuff.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Dimarzio/Ibz pickups

If you don't have a strong preference over one of the guitars in particular, i'd go for the 3120 then. I happen to be a proud owner of one. Already comes with a PAF Pro and a Tone Zone so it'll save you the extra $140 or so.

Re: Dimarzio/Ibz pickups

The new RG3120 I'm looking at does not have Dimarzio pickups. It has stock Dimarzio/ibz pickups, no Tone Zone, PAF Pro, or whatever. My understanding was that Ibanez changed the RG3120 pickup config, perhaps 2005 or mid-2005?

Re: Dimarzio/Ibz pickups

Hi, I have a question, not sure if I should start a enw thread.

What Dimarzio pickup are similar to Dimarzio IBZ, I love the IBZ in my 2550Egk, I'm thinking of buying a RG 1570 soon and I would like to put in some Dimarzio, but I'm kinda lost as what I would need. Norton's, Tone zone and the super Distortion seems good but I just dont know, dont think I can try any before I buy them. So what pickup are similar to IBZ. I play mostly Vai, Satch and John Petrucci stuff. my tone is a mix of Vai and Petrucci, heavy but not to heavy or scooped. Must have a great lead sound. Thanks for the help.

Re: Dimarzio/Ibz pickups

Woops! Sorry about that. I haven't really been following the new Ibanez guitars. I thought they discontinued the 3120, lol. Mine is an '03 so i'm guessing that was the last year they had Dimarzios in them.

Re: Dimarzio/Ibz pickups

Thanks for the link, Bezial. These will hopefully sound better, to my ears, than a V7/V8. I've had several Ibanez gtrs with the V7/V8 & was content for a while with those, eventually replacing them.

I answered this in another thread, but I'll do it here, too.

I teach guitar at a store that's an Ibanez dealer. Last summer, I bought an Ibanez RGA321FSPB and thought the pickups (which are the Ibanez/ DiMarzio model) were a little weak. So, I asked the owner of the store to call Ibanez and ask what these pickups were comparable to. The Ibanez rep told the owner that they're pretty much PAF pros.

Hope that helps.

from my experience, they don't sound anything like paf pros. i'd probably trust the official dimarzio description over anything, although even that description is an approximate comparison. if you really like those pickups so much, i'd suggest getting on e-bay or the for sale/wanted forum on this site. there's plenty of guys here who are switching out their dmz/ibz's with aftermarket pickups, so you could probably find them pretty cheap.

Re: Dimarzio/Ibz pickups

Well today i went and got me a RG2550EGK, i just couldnt resist myself until tomorrow, so i went and got, and just now i´m playing it.
I now i know how it sounds, and the pups sound warm, round, edgy and clear, they´re not compare to my other pups which are duncans, distortions and custom.

Re: Dimarzio/Ibz pickups

they´re kinda of paf, but not the same, just by reading the specs on a paf and comparing it with my ears.
