Smile Doubts about buying an Ibanez Prestige

Aloha all,

Long time reader, first time poster reporting for duty!

Having a bit of a problem, and I hope you guys/girls can help me out. Gonna buy a new guitar in the next couple of weeks, but I have honestly no idea what to buy. The choice is between a PRS SE or S2 (depends which one plays the best) and an Ibanez Prestige, probably the RG655 since I don't like the sharktooth inlays Wish they'd sell the maple fretboard version here in Belgium, but hey ... can't have it all can we? The reason I'm considering an Ibanez is because I find them very appealing and I'm starting to play more lead these days.

The problem is, I've had wristproblems before, all due to "guitar neck strangulation" (deathgrip) and I'm afraid the Ibanez's neck might be counterproductive. I have relative small hands for a bloke; not tiny or anything, just not spider-ish ; and I'm wondering if some of you had any problems cramping up on a Wizard Prestige neck?

Cheers, thanks in advance, giddy up, etc ...

Kevin

PS: other suggestions are always welcome!

Re: Doubts about buying an Ibanez Prestige

I have only played a couple of RG's but I don't know the specific models, and the necks were quite nice to play.
I play Ibanez Jems and the necks on them are awesome, smooth and very comfortable to play at all registers.
My friend owns a Jem7DBK with the wizard neck, and it's even smaller than the necks on my Jems, so you definitely can't go wrong with a wizard neck.

Re: Doubts about buying an Ibanez Prestige

I know several people who complain about cramping on super wizard necks - they are very thin! I, however, have had no problem with them. I think if you play in a relaxed fashion, you're very unlikely to have a problem with a wizard neck. If it is the thinness of particular neck profiles that give you cramp issues, you can always look elsewhere in the prestige line. The JS series have a chunkier neck profile, and are a favourite among those Ibanez players who don't like really thin necks.

Re: Doubts about buying an Ibanez Prestige

The only time I have cramping issues is when I'm holding the same chord formation for extending periods of time, but I think this happens regardless of the kind of neck I'm playing. You might want to look into something with a Wizard II neck, or the older Viper profile.

+1 on the JS necks. I had been having cramping problems on the thin necks too. Finally took a gamble on a JS model and I love it, a good compromise between fast and comfortable. Kind of like a strat only not as chunky. If possible, try playing one for a while... It's worth it! Probably the most comfortable body/neck combo I've ever played. Great quality instrument all around.

Re: Doubts about buying an Ibanez Prestige

yeah the js neck is the best out there, i have small hands myself and have never played a guitar more comfortable, i can play it for 2-3 hour stretches with no problems, yet my les paul i can stand for about 10 mins and my left hand really starts to stuggle

I think if you are able you should sit down in a music store and play different guitars with varying neck thickness for a good while. I personally like Prestige Wizard best though I think all Prestige guitars are now Super Wizard.

Or just get a 7-string wizard neck, that would be enough to fill the hand . Also ARZ line has massive necks.

Re: Doubts about buying an Ibanez Prestige

If you can get along with the thin neck, and want a maple fretboard 655, call rich at ibanez rules.

His banner is above. He ships internationally, is great to deal with, and will deliver a guitar that is second to none.
i bought an rg3xxv from him a few months back and even though it is of indonesian manufacture, it plays as good or better than all of my other guitars. I chose the silver package, as it includes a comprehensive fret level, shaping, and polishing. Well worth it IMO.

Re: Doubts about buying an Ibanez Prestige

Oh and since you're in Europe and if you like thicker necks, the RC1720M SGM should be out in Europe this year. It's one of the thickest necks I've seen on an Ibanez, but it's still a bit thinner than a strat or Tellie neck. Also has a flatter radius and the pickups are to die for.

I'd definitely recommend a prestige wizard neck though for something a bit thinner. I have 2 prestiges and they are both INSANELY comfortable. I like them more than my Wizard neck on my RG560 tbh. That little extra meat is really nice to have.

Re: Doubts about buying an Ibanez Prestige

Alrighty, going to test the RG at the local guitar shack. 30 minutes on the guitar should give me an idea whether the neck's gonna give me trouble or not. Really hoping it doesn't. Been drooling for an Ibanez for years now, but always bought Fender or Gibson instead. /stupid

If it's too flat, I'll try out the JS like Craig suggested. Not the most attractive guitar in my eyes, but far from ugly nevertheless.

As for the 7string suggestion, I really don't like seven strings. Tried them out, and never had the "click". Bummer. They open up registers out of reach for a 6'er :/
