Down Tune - String Guages

My brother wants me to set up his 6-string like a 7-string minus the high e. *What string guages should I use? *He'll probably tune down to A (a la Korn).

try a set of 7-strings(low string a .056 or thicker) from ernie ball, or d'addario and minus the high string. then if he doesn't like it, choose a more appropriate set next time.

Isn't this going to cause too much tension on the neck? *I mean a six-string usualy isn't setup to handle those string guages... But if your brother tunes it down to A it would ease the tension, and then you can forget about what I said

if twohands really meant "set up" then it should be fine to use a set made for 7-strings sans the high e, and set up the guitar. if your just throwing on a set of strings to downtune then you will still have to set up the intonation, neck bow, and string action adjustments. that is unless he is going to just play korn songs, then it doesn't matter, does it?

lol, that's funny, ESPECIALLY since I am a Korn fan. *I would love to hear a Korn style band with Vai style solos (a la the jam sessions they did). *He would be playing some Korn, but also some of his own music. *I've never adjusted the neck, but could do the intonation. *How would I adjust the neck?

check jemsite.com or ibanez.com's help/tech sections for all about setting up. well ibanez guitars at least but setups on other guitars shouldn't differ too greatly. the neck shouldn't be a too much of a problem as long as the new string tension isn't much tighter than the old string tension.

what is the guitar anyways?

I did that with my RG450 and just the other day while checking it out for stripping more parts, I noticed the receiving cavity post for the trem post was pulled towards the neck some. *Actually made some progress thru the wood in the body. *Not good.
I'd reconsider doing that to the guitar if I were you.

Although he didn't detune really, SRV I understand used a .60 gauge string for his low E on his strats (and he was known to solo) so I don't think thicker strings will necessarily be bad for a guitar if properly set up, especially if it is detuned (where the strings are more floppy). I've used that same gauge as SRV (just minus the talent) on my 6 string ibanez' with NO problems, and NO string breakage.

Before I started playing 7-strings, I use to tune my 6-string down to B. *I suggest trying a set of D'Adarrio EJ22's. *They're gauged from 13-56 and they seemed to do the trick quite well.

I agree with Rev......56 is a good gauge for a low B or A. Good rule of thumb is that standard should be 10's and every step below that you should go up one gauge on the strings

If you put heavier strings on a guitar and keep it tuned to the same pitch, then yes, you're going to have problems. Put heavy strings on and tune down, and the effect is pretty much canceled out. With the right gauge and tuning combination, you'll end up with almost the same tension as a standard-tuned 6 string with 9's or 10's.
