Question Drop C tuning on my S540...string guage?

I have 9's at standard tuning currently. I would like to make the minimal amount of adjutments to the trem springs, truss rod, intonation, etc. It has the wizard I neck (thin neck). I would also like to be able to purchase a "standard" set of strings which are readily availible (D'addirio or GHS). I'm thinking 10's or 11's. I can't imagine 12's on that guitar. I have 3 springs in the standard parallel configuration. I don't want to add a spring. I'd prefer to keep the parallel setup, but an arrow setup isn't out of the question.

Basically, I want to offset the required tension for the trem by selecting the best gauge string at drop C tuning.

So what do you guys think? 10's, 11's?

I'd also consider a tremelno down the road for this guitar.

BTW...it's an original edge trem.

I would sure use 11's for Drop C on an Edge-equipped guitar, 12's for a fixed bridge. You could probably get away with 10's, but you're probably going to be adjusting the spring claw a bit at that point.

I personally use 11's for Drop C (Ernie Ball Power Slinky's) but then I like the feel of 10s in standard. If you want the feel of 9's in standard then you're probably going to want to go with 10's or maybe a custom gauge with thicker bass strings and thinner high strings.

Re: Drop C tuning on my S540...string guage?

I have 11-56 guage strings on my 540 tuned to C# standard. I would get a 10-52 set and a single 58 for drop C, but that's just me.

Re: Drop C tuning on my S540...string guage?

Thanks for the responses.

I think I'm going to try this....

D'addario EXL 110-7 ...... 10-13-17-26-36-46-59/56

Strings for a seven....I just won't use the 26

The 59/56 is a discrepency between the packaging shown on the D'addario web site and the packaging that appears on the guitar center web site.

Same EXL 110-7 package shows 59 on D'addario website and 56 on guitar center website. They are the same EXL 110-7 package, but show a differant gauge. What's up with that? Wierd.

Anyway, as a point of referance:

D'addario EXL 140's are ....... 10-13-17-30-42-52

GHS ZAKK WYLDE's are........ 10-13-17-36-52-60

D'addario EXL 110-7 are....... 10-13-17-26-36-46-59/56

The EXL 110-7's seem like a nice compromise.

I'll give "my opinion" when I'm done.

Re: Drop C tuning on my S540...string guage?

Hmm, I think D'add recently upped all the low B string guage in their 7 string sets, so that might be what's causing the strangeness?

Sounds like a good plan though.

Re: Drop C tuning on my S540...string guage?

Well...It worked out ok.

I set the (3) 16 year old stock springs in an arrow pattern. I had to crank the claw pretty far...still a little room. Adjusted the bridge for decent action...had to crank that down pretty far... too.
I still need to tweak the truss rod and intonation. A few other tweaks. But, overall it worked out. It is not the shredding machine it used to be. Though I can still rip pretty good on it.

I use the S2170 prestige for that anyway.

I already picked up half of the disturbed...the sickness album. That's it for now. I gotta go re-fuel (food). Plus my wife is nagging... dinner is ready.

Thanks again, Rock on!!!
