early saber with no serial number mij

i recently got my hands on an ibanez 540s from the late 80s or early 90s and it has absolutely no serial number or indication of what year it was made and id love to know what year its from so if anyone on here could work it out thatd be great

this is the guitar completely stock it was sitting in a guys shed for 20 years until i visited
Attachment 3857
it has "custom made" inlaid on the 21st fret
the neckplate says "ibanez new ideas for todays musicians", "made in japan" and has a space where the serial numbers are usually stamped
its got the ibz usa f2 and c2 pickups and the beehive knobs

if anyone could tell me the year of this guitar i would be very grateful

Circa 1989 I'd say.

Re: early saber with no serial number mij

It's a '90 I'd say.

I don't think they started using that "Custom Made" inlay on the 21st fret until 1990. Yours is clearly a Euro model with the beehive knobs.

Does it have a Made in Japan sticker on the back of the headstock? What does the neck plate look like? Does it also say Made in Japan?

after a ton of searching a guy said the "custom made" inlay was introduced in 1990 and i also found pictures of it from 88 and 89, that being said this is the internet and people lie/get things wrong alot :P

Re: early saber with no serial number mij

It's definitely a '90. It should have a serial number on the back of the headstock that reads either F0XXXXX or F9XXXXX depending on when it was built.

Made in Japan neck plate and those volume/tone knobs usually go together. The US market guitars have different knobs and a Bensalem, PA (for that year) neck plate on them.

Re: early saber with no serial number mij

i also have a 540S custom made with the same metal neck plate without any number. But I have a reference behind the headstock (sticker) and the guitar is a 1991 model. Maybe did the skicker fall.

My one is a LTD Model HSH (dark grey with shark teeth and "custom made")

Hope this helps...

Re: early saber with no serial number mij

89-90,numbers on back of headstock must have been worn off.
Japan built and assembled,......beehives still with guitar = good score.

The oval inlays are on the S540, not the 540S.

Re: early saber with no serial number mij

540S and S540 aren't the same? I thought they were...my mistakr!

Except oval inlays instead of shark teeth, what are the differences between these models?
