Ebony Fretbaord is cracked

There is a picture of what I found tonight

Not sure how well you can see it in the picture but basically theres cracks from the 14th fret right down to the 24th. I recently moved across the country so Im not sure if that had something to do with this but the rest of my guitars are good. Of course after finding this took a minor panic attack and checked every guitar over and added lemon oil ( I moved to a dry climate ). This weekend im gonna try and restring my other guitars and get a good oiling on them all.

Is this something I should try and fix ? Or is it OK to leave ?

Re: Ebony Fretbaord is cracked

Oh man I feel sorry for you to find that. Did the guitars get cold or damp during your transit? Did the fret wire get very cold? Did the guitars get warmed up quickly after being brought in from the car/van? I would guess it has something to do with temperature change. I had a crack appear on the back of a neck near the nut because the guitar was cold and went into back-bow for too long. I wish I could offer some advice. I would wait for others' advice before putting any oil on it just in case it makes the wood swell in the cracks. Don't worry, I'm sure there's a solution for sealing the cracks. Best of luck mate.

It's the nature of ebony wood (very dry) to crack no matter how good you take care of it. Google images "ebony cracks" and you will see what i mean. I would leave it as is.

So this wouldn't effect the playability of the instrument ? Also, is it ok to oil the fretboard every now and again still?

No, i don't see how. Sure you can, maybe 2-3 times a year. I use lemon oil on my bass fingerboard.
