Epiphone MIJ Flying V

I picked this thing up on CL sometime back. The guy I got it from was stationed in Japan and bought it there.
He brought it home with him and we traded some stuff and I'm into it pretty cheap.
I just can't find any info on it. The serial number (J904014) number doesn't jive with anything I have been able to find on the web and I don't even remember the last time anything was made in Japan by Epi.

Anybody know anything about this guitar?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Really?
What makes you think that?
The guy did tell me he has had it for years...like since the early or mid 90's.

Re: Epiphone MIJ Flying V

Body contours just look wrong. Also, Epi has not made guitars in Japan for some time, and none of those were Gobsin clones except the more recent run of "Elitest" guitars, of which I have never seen a V. But mainly the headstock is too blunt and the shoulders are too slim.

Also the control locations are in the wrong spot and the pickguard is incorrect for an Epi or Gibson. What kind of pups are in it? can you supply a gut shot?

I don't have a gut shot but I can take one...the pups are original and I'm assuming this cuz they are rather weak.

What would one look for in the gut shot or the pups?

I did take the truss cover off, those 3 screws are in the original spots...in other words there are no extra holes and the everything lines up.

Also look how far the fretboard extends into the neck pocket. Maybe a fine guitar but a seriously doubt its a legit Epi.

The electronics can help authenticate the instrument.

Re: Epiphone MIJ Flying V

I'll give you my theory. I was stationed in Japan from 1991-1994. We used to go TDY (Temporary Duty) to places like Korea, etc. Back in those days, Korea was known for cranking out some fairly decent knock-offs. I mean--much better than the Chibanez crap we see from China. I'll bet that dude went TDY to Korea, picked it up there, and brought it back. There was a guy outside of Osan AB called Mr. Potato and he "ordered" his knock-offs from one of the factories in Seoul. I had a tobacco sunburst strat that I got from him for about $150.00, and you could not tell it from the real thing.
I wonder if that V is something he got from Korea...

Re: Epiphone MIJ Flying V

Hmm, he did mention being stationed in Japan around that time period.

The build quality is fantastic and it plays great. The only things I can find wrong with it are a little oxidation on the pups and tailpc, a couple of nicks on the headstock and swirlmarks on the PG and behind the tailpc.

I'll open her up tonight and see what lurks inside.

Re: Epiphone MIJ Flying V

it does look a little wonky. Emailing Epiphone would be your best bet, otherwise we can all sit around and make guesses

Re: Epiphone MIJ Flying V

Well, bridge and tailpc ar MIJ.

No markings on the pups and how does the neck joint look?

Looks like an email to Epiphone tomorrow.

Re: Epiphone MIJ Flying V

I think the early 90's Epi V's had a much pointier headstock, though still rounded. This one is quite a bit more blunt. I also don't believe it's a legit Epi, but that doesn't mean it isn't as good.
