Esp Custom Shop?

Hi, i know i'm creating loads of threads where i need advice about guitars, but hey, that's what this place is for right?

Ok, i now have the chance on yet another guitar, but i'm not entirely sure it's 100% real. It's said to be an ESP custom shop-built guitar from the late 80's. I just want to check that it really is, so that i'm not getting ripped off. Maybe some one can tell me the value?
I only have one pic, but hopefully i'll soon have more information. Please tell me some of you guys know more than i do!
Here's the pic.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: It's a necktrough... if it matters.

Re: Esp Custom Shop?

If the headstock or the back of the headstock says ESP custom (-shop) then it's probably real. Not sure if you can tell from serial number, not that familiar with ESP numbering.

ESP custom shop is public and they'll make pretty much anything and everything (at least if you order from outside the US, I think they won't do certain body shapes/control configs/paints for US orders because they want to avoid lawsuits..).

As for price, I only know for sure new custom shop orders these days will cost you $3k-$4k+... don't know how much they were going for in the 80's (most likely less)... but from what I've seen being sold I don't think used 80's ones have been going for too much.. anywhere from relatively cheap (<900) to around 2k depending on the guitar, if it's a one-off order or a special/limited run, etc...

You may want to ask around the espguitars forum. From what I've seen they seem to know their ESP's like people here know their Ibanezes .

Thanks... i've just started a thread at the esp forum.
It appears to be the same guitar (not exactly, different pattern) that the guitarist of Pain of Salvation used before he got sponsored.'

Very strange indeed.

Re: Esp Custom Shop?

That pickup config scream 'Kramer Nightswan' -- hey, weren't Kramers made in the same factory as ESPs in the 80's & or 90's?
